Jellyfish sightings and your Rx?

Was out all day today. Hart Miller to Still pond. No sightings. :)

We've had jellyfish for about the last month in the South River where my boat is. Mysteriously this weekend they were nowhere to be found. We had my two nieces birthday party at the house, and people were in the river all day sunday... not 1 sting or sighting. Very strange, but not complaining!

Similar reports from boat club members who were up in Rock Hall harbor for the Pirates and Wenches festival. All swimming, no jellyfish.

saw a couple in main stem of the bay in the Tolchester area on Saturday. Spent all day in Fairlee Creek on Sunday and didn't see any.

The Jellyfish that were so thick you could walk across them on the St. Mary's River (lower Potomac) have really thinned out over the last week. Tonight I still saw several at once, but for some reason they have no tentacles, or they are very, very small. Not 4+ feet long like there were just a few weeks ago.

The map still shows them very concentrated, but hopefully they are on their way out now. The end of August seems to be average for us where they begin to disappear.

I dont really ever remember them going away once they came in (in the past). But like I say, I wont complain if they're gone the rest of the season. I have one of those nettle pools, and it works great, but it's sure nice not to have to deal with cleaning all the silt off the netting and letting it dry after using it.

Oh yea, they come in slowly, but leave very quickly. Nearly overnight. I've had it marked on my calender for the last 4-5 years or so when we first notice them and when they disappear. Last year was the latest they over appeared, and this year was the earliest!

When did you notice they start to disappear? And by the way, what is the purpose of Jellyfish? Are they even in the food chain?

Well I would say about the last week or so. Tonight I only saw one, with no tentacles which is pretty amazing this early. It was an outgoing tide though, but they are definitely not as strong as they were a Mont ago.

Only thing that eats them I think are loggerhead turtles, and there are not a lot of them around these parts!
