I filled my fresh water tank today and a few minutes later the jabsco water pump just get pumping water out of the boat. It would run continuously until it emptied the tank. I cleaned the filter although it did not stop. Is this a sign that the pump needs to be replaced or is there something else that could be causing the pump to run?

It was pumping water "out" of the boat? Do you mean the bilge was filling up (from the fresh water pump emptying the tank) and the bilge pumps were pumping the water overboard?

If the tank is emptying (and it's not being done through a faucet left on somewhere), then there has to be a leak somewhere. All the pump knows is that somewhere down the line water is being demanded. It doesn't know the difference between a faucet and a leak.

What he said. Sounds like you have a leak somewhere..

When I got back to the boat the guy in the slip next to me said water has been slowly and consistently coming out of the drain outlet on the port side of the boat. I checked the pump and it was slowly cycling water like something was calling for water. When I turn the water on it works but will not shut off it slowly runs. It is like something in the boat is running but everything is shut off? If that makes any sense

Check that drain outlet compared to your owner's manual. I'm not sure which side your hot water heater is on, but it sounds as though it might be a leaking pressure relief valve on the heater. If that's where the water is coming from, check the valve to be sure it's in the fully closed position. If it is, then replace valve. In the meantime, turn off the pump.

Thanks Dennis Pump is off I will check the hot water heater this week

Good luck. If it turns out to be what I'm thinking, it's an easy fix.

Reg, I want to say they're about $25 for the Atwood part? It's nothing special - just a 1/2" relief valve. BUT, if you're just getting a little trickle here and there, what you're seeing might be normal - it's just doing what it's supposed to. You could try resetting the air gap in the heater and see if that helps. To reset the air gap, turn off heater and the supply and let the water cool down (or just run cold water through for a bit with it turned off). Open the closest hot water valve and the relief valve. Snap the relief valve (and the faucet) closed when water no longer comes out the thru-hull. Turn everything back on and see what happens.

Actually just recently did this drill which solved what I thought was a problem (until I read the WH manual)......My bigger issue was the apparent leak I believe I heard when purging the tank. Hopefully I didn't cause anything new, but there was water spraying up into the port gunwale from an unidentified location when I closed the pressure relief valve and turned the source water back on to the water heater. Couldn't see where it was coming from, but it was spraying pretty hard when I toggled that valve. Is there another pressure relief somewhere in line between the tank and lines heading to the head and galley sinks?

Unit seems to be working fine, with no leaks or bilge water, this past weekend, but an inquiring mind wants to know what that spray was all about.......

Dennis
it was the relief valve that was leaking and the valve was totally shot. I needed to pull the water heater out as the valve was on their pretty good. It was a good thing because the power connections were gone as well. I ordered the valve online and it was $40. I probably could have found it cheaper but am getting it next day. Beware of using valves from a regular plumbing supply house they can be rated for a lot more pressure which would not be good in a 6 gal marine tank. Thanks again for all your help. I think this site is awesome and appreciate all the time people take to help out.
