I've unlocked my cabin door for good......should you?

I do not lock my boat just in case something is going on and one of my dock neighbors need to get in there for whatever reason when I am not there. Also, I don't have much of value in the cabin....its in the cockpit thats were all the money is. Full JL Audio setup....whats stopping thieves from taking that? Can't lock the cockpit! If someone wants my beer, booze and kid's snacks then go for it, but leave my JL Audio stuff alone.

I lock my cabin with a key and my boat with an insurance policy. I don't really care to much about any of this. If something happens insurance will take care of it. It's why I have insurance.

I started this thread and wanted give a follow up. In my first post I referenced the 40' Silverton on another forum that was recently broken into and the sliding glass door heavily damaged. The initial estimates were 15K.

Well the manufacturer of the door has responded with a price....ready? 46K.......yes that's right 46K. No, I did not mean $4600.

The manufacturer of the door (Trend Industries) says is was 15K in 2003 but it is out of production and it is curved glass etc.

So if he wants a new one they will happily make him one for 46K.

Nice!

Might as well get 2, just in case!

My boat was broken into about 7 yrs ago, sitting on the trailer, under a light,in front of the marina store door, next to a coastguard boat. The doors were estimated to be about $1500 to be replaced,i have a plastics guy though and i had him make them for about $120.Whomever broke in took nothing but a nap a piss and puked on the carpet.I have been told one boat had been broken into at the marina once and all that was missing was booze.I dont lock it anymore.Of course those cheap doors were not on my searay.

Is it Trend Technologies? Trend Industries looks like a startup. I know Silverton went bankrupt in 2012 and that their assets were acquired by Egg Harbor but that doesn't necessarily explain the price tag for the door.

I would expect Egg Harbor are the folks to talk to since they own the CAD drawings. Hard to imagine $46k to fabricate a door unless Trend is trying to recover its bankruptcy losses. If it is an older boat.....the insurance company is just going to give the owner a check for a much smaller amount and it will be his problem.

I'd be worried about the police making assumptions regarding my unlocked door. The way police are today, you're guilty until proven innocent.

An unlocked cabin door makes it looks like insurance fraud in the eye's of the police. I can just hear the questions now..."are you in the habit of leaving your cabin door unlocked"..."where were you last night when this was happening"..."do you have anyone that can vouch for your whereabouts at the time of the incident"..."have you had any insurance claims in the past".

Now picture the insurance adjuster reading over the police report.

My cabin door stays locked, as stated earlier by other posters, that's why we pay for insurance.
