The Admiral and I decided to get our home painted. After an exhausting search to find the right colors that took over a month, and a search of Craigslist to find a good company, it finally got started about 2 weeks ago.

The contractor did some wood replacement (the house is ~20 years old) then brought on his painting crew. Four guys showed up to start painting and it took them 8 days to get it done. There was one day of weather delay in there and I didn't count that in the 8 days.

I'm fairly picky about a job like this and I must say that their work was exemplary. They sprayed, rolled and brushed the paint and I've never seen paint put on so thick. Also, their attention to detail was amazing. They did some "extras" at no extra charge and we appreciated that

One of the extras was--we have a cupola on the roof that has a weathervane on it. The weathervane was way off in it's alignment so when they were painting the cupola they straightened the weathervane so it points north again, then put a screw into it so it can't change directions, then painted the weathervane with a high gloss, high temperature black paint. Then, to top it off they painted the letters (N,S,E,W) a bright gold color.

Another free extra was my wife had picked out the color to paint the front doors. We gave them a paint sample and they bought the paint. After the paint was on, I hated the color. So, back to Lowe's to pick a different color, then get a sample to give to the painters, then back to the paint store for the new color, then repaint the doors. This color is acceptable to me. Not one I would have picked, but acceptable.

Anyway, the thread is a pat on the back to the contractor and the painting company for a job well done.

Good job, but I would have expected any house built in the last 20 - 30 years to have aluminum or vinyl siding. Last wooden side house I have seen were built in the 50s like the one I grew up in.

Only low end houses use vinyl or aluminum siding. Aluminum siding is virtually gone it is too expensive of a material. If one side of your house is hail damaged it is better for the insurance company to put vinyl on the whole thing than to replace one side of aluminum.

Most nicer homes are using cement board. It is available now and so many different patterns it can mimic the look of cedar, it can look like cedar shake siding and many others.

As for using Cedar, after the LP siding debacle many builders returned to using traditional cedar until cement board came out.

Interesting. Mine was built in 1980, main house is still aluminum. Addition was added in 1995, that part is vinyl. Most of neighbors have replaced the alum with vinyl but they don’t have boats so they waste money on siding.

Front doors are a crazy anomaly. Colors look completely different depending on the light. I had to redo ours about 5 times.

And not a single pic ? :(

We built our home in 2000, "hardy plank", James Hardy brand concrete siding. Two exterior repaints since and one new roof. Still looks new.

I was the GC, and we literally built as much as we could together. Took us 9 months.

I had a great experience recently with the Cats (Yancy Marine) and posted that on the forum.

And the interior cleaning company for The Office.

Good to share good experiences ,they are few and far apart with vendors/contractors these days.

In 1980 aluminum was still a thing. Surprised neighbors are not using cement board. It is the best ever made…

That is the best brand. FYI, it is Hardie Plank, from James Hardie…

Yeah, I know, I AM the photo Nazi but we had to go out of town today. I'll post them tomorrow if I can.

Yesterday afternoon the contractor came by to check on the work the painters did. He and I walked around the house, put up a couple of sprinkler drip lines they had missed putting up and he touched up a paint spot on the front porch.

This morning after I posted this and before we left town the painters came by. Apparently the contractor had seen some spots that needed a touch up and had them come by to fix the problems. I had not noticed those spots, and likely never would have. But he did and had them fix them.

Now THAT is going above and beyond! Thanks, John.

We had LP siding installed about 10 years ago as opposed to Hardie. We liked it better.

Hey, are you trying to start an argument?... My low end siding is higher quality than your low end siding.:D

EFIS and Hardie board..... what many new commercial buildings are finished with...

When I built my house on the ranch in 04 I went with ship lap pre-primed pine with two coats of mid range exterior latex. It is just now needing a recoat with a couple of repair areas. I am doing the repaint myself, I started last fall and got half way done before I screwed up my back moving the ladder! I will finish this fall. I have lost all faith in using 'professionals for something I can do myself. I hate paying for something and being disappointed in the product and I lack the personality to demand a redo. I figure if they are capable of doing it right they will do it right the first time, if not I'll probably never be happy.
Glad @GFC found a painter that paints with pride instead of what seems to be more common, slap it on and get out.
Cheers
