It's mid March and I am thinking about wetting the boat - Am I nuts?

I took the winter off wiht the boat and now am looking at my second season. The air temps are around 80 and the water is 58. Too cold to swim but how cold is too cold to go for a run? I am not a fisherman and would likely just cruise around.

Hi Kermit,

We are splashing this weekend...Lake Wylie. Weather is too nice. That is, unless it rains, of which there is a 50% chance Sat and Sun.

Good Luck!
John

You might not be crazy. I brought my boat home this time last year (to an attached garage) and just made sure the engine was drained. My daughter told me the "wake board champ" at her high school was already out with a wetsuit - I'm pretty sure his folks have a nice warm garage for the boat.

Our frost risk is done about April 15, and in my garage, it is probably done with the nice long term forecast we have.

Good luck and enjoy.

Nope, it was 73 today in Buffalo NY. Usually this time of year the building (at work) where my boat is has a pile of snow in front of the door. There is nothing even on the ground. I have the itch too, but its March.

In Wisconsin, we are in the 70's this week and next. Marina opened up this week, no water until April 15, but power starting now.... now if I just hadn't procrastinated on getting the Bravo III's refinished....

I'm going in next week, but with the warm weather this week, I wish I was in already. Last year the marina was shoveling snow out of the parking lot.

Don't forget that here around Asheville we had a very similar "mild" winter in 93. Then the blizzard hit in March and buried everything in a hard freeze. I was ready to de-winter and thought I might just wait a couple more weeks.

OldSkool... does Keowee stay full pool or is it like all the TVA lakes that draw down till spring time?

Trucky,
First let me know when you are going down and I'll try to have OldSkool ready.
Keowee is a power generation lake so the level stays fairly even. Even in the winter. I have seen it low at 6-8 feet but not like Jocassee was 4 years ago at -45 feet.
It is a beautiful lake and you can find water temps to fit your desires. Cooler up near Jocassee inlet and very warm towards Lake Hartwell on the south end. We boat near the middle at Crow Creek outlet. We find the water just right and clear.

We took my old Regal down there several years back and looked at a place in a small park kind of on the SW side. We all liked what we saw and decided to go out on the boat a while to think about it. I think I chose the wrong cove to pull into to swim as the parade of ocean liners going by had wakes that rivaled Oahu's north shore. (Well, maybe not quite, but big) It all seemed too crowded, too busy, too fast, etc. so we went home. I hear there are places you can go that aren't like that on the lake. After the last 15 years at Santeetlah we're considering trying out other places again, including Keowee and maybe Cherokee in TN.

I'm a big wuss when it comes to water temps... 82 or better or I'm not goin in. We may rent a place down there for a weekend coming up soon to give it the test again. I saw one place that had 32 bedrooms and 9.5 bathrooms for only about $5k a night. I don't think it came with a chef so I'm not so interested...
