As we have had a mild winter here in the mid Atlantic the bug population is sure to explode. I have heard conversations saying the bug zappers actually lure bugs from a distant due to its blue lights. It's not a wise idea to burn candles on boats, and the sprays sometime run me away. So what do you recommend ?

We have had good success with Thermacell. It repels rather then attract/kill.

Jeff,
One of my most frequent destinations is Watch Hill, Fire Island. Since it is a federal park they do no insect control whatsoever. Because of this the marshes are an excellent breeding ground for mosquitos. Many of the campers that I encounter over there swear by the belt clip-on bug repellents. There is no spray and it travels with you creating a protective shield so to speak around you. I borrowed one last summer for a night and was pleasantly surprised at how well it performed. Might be worth a shot!

big +1 on Thremacell
no noise and no smell...works great
UNLESS it is windy

use one alot in early archery deer season

We use citronella candles with some success unless there's a breeze blowing. If the bugs get really bad we go inside the boat.

I'll have to check out the Thermacell and the clip on repellants.

I use these at home... no bugs no problems...

The left overs are tough to handle on my equipment though.

I have never found anything that works at the boat. I'm going to order the thermacell latern now and try that... even tried the listerene thing to no avail. Even tried 98% deet and the little blood suckers still showed up.
