What a relief I did not go into Atlanta at noon for a job interview on Tuesday! I spoke to a trucker yesterday he did not move for 16 hours on 285, ouch.

Is that a plow on the old Ford?....didn't think the south had any of those...

Sue spent Tuesday night in the Flight Attendant lounge at the aiport. she had come in from Costa Rica - she worked a flight to LA yesterday "to get a bed and a shower" as she said. I spent Tuesday night in the Pilot Training Center - sleeping in a cabin mockup seat. It was wild watching the TV - gridlock on the highways - three babys were born on the interstates.

Got to luv winter in the south. (grin) Got a couple inches up here in the mountains, but we know how to drive. Honestly there really i nothing you can do on ice, we don't have the equipment to handle the ice and once the gridlock starts it goes downhill pretty fast, cant get the sand truck that we do have out fast enough.

I realize that snow is a novelty down in your parts but I have really hard time feeling sorry for you and the light dusting you had.....

These pictures don't do the accumulation justice but this was last week after I finished shoveling:

And these are the current conditions....with 3 more hours of steady snowfall for a total of 8" - 12" today.....

As an ex New Yorker, the problem here is lack of equipment and this is just plain 3 inches of ice. No salt or sand. Roads remind me of driving on the lakes up there. It was announced on the news this morning, if a road hasn't been touch, it wont be. Just wait for the thaw. At least we are back to 50s and 60s tomorrow

I was in Atlanta during this. Atlanta did not send the salt trucks out until 6am the morning AFTER the storm. In Knoxville and I'm sure other parts, the roads are often pretreated. This make a huge difference. In Atlanta, they were too cheap to put salt solution out early. - What if it didn't snow - they would have wasted that money. It was all about money. There were kids that had to stay the night on busses - heads should roll but they won't. They'll act as if they've learned from this - same thing happened 2 years ago - they didn't learn. Probably the most incompetent government I've seen.

Last night's news showed pics of the freeways around Atlanta and I was amazed to see only an inch or so of snow, no ice, no drifting, nothing that should have caused the gridlock. But there it was.

For those of us who grew up in the northern states or live there now, we just sit here and chuckle at it.

I also grew up in the north. Big thing here in the south is ICE!!! this was the first snow since I've been here (24yrs) that it was cold enough to light and fluffy. Not heavy wet snow. BUT the temps had been warm for the days leading up to it. So when it hit it melted then froze. Welcome to the skating rink. It happens not too often. People aren't used to it. I laughed my buttocks off listening to the weather people getting excited that " the Triad may see an inch of snow". Good thing I had my beer, bread, and milk. This wasn't even a 1 loafer.

1-2" here or 4-8" Saturday, take it with a yawn.

Good eye, I know of one other commercial snow plow truck in the Atlanta area. A couple of counties contacted me asked me to be avail if state did not get to them quickly. Problem is they did not pre treat as mentioned previously and all the snow was packed into a sheet of ice plus grid lock.

What I used to do for entertainment was go loiter at the local grocery store at the first mention of snow in ATL people would fight over the last loaf of bread and gallon of milk.

All it takes is one or 2 vehicles to slide and block the roads. A lot of cars in ATL have bald tires throw in ice with a bit of H2O and rest is self explanatory :)

I watched on the news last night and felt terrible for the hell so many people went through with children isolated from their families. Horrible. I agree it looked to me as a melt from all the traffic, all that traffic preventing the trucks from treating the road, traffic stopped more freezing and no way to treat makes for an absolute impassable road. Pre-treating is the key....

Happened several years ago on the I-78 corridor in Allentown up here. They thought it would be better to leave the snow on the road to gain 'traction'. One jack-knifed tractor trailer and it was ice, impassable, a few more trucks stuck and folks trapped for over a day...

Glad its melting away soon...

Hey, now I can be like Humph and rub your noses in our weather! We are going to get 1 inch today, 1-2 inches tomorrow, and 4 to 6 inches on Sat. Then, next week, we have the potential for the seasons worst snow storm yet!! None of this measly 1 inch or so, that doesn't really impact anything around here...

Ahh, I feel so much better.....no wait, no I don't. You guys down south still have it better. Stay safe!

On a side note, the snow banks along the county roads are now tall enough that you can't see over them, which is something we haven't seen for a long time.

HAH! It rained here today, nothing to rub noses in. (but it is still in the 60's) We got a good 1/10 of a inch! Drought is OVER!

90% of the news coverage y'all have seen didn't occur in ATLANTA! Rush "hour" here begins at 3:30 and lasts until 6:30 on an average day. What happened on Tuesday was a mass exodus within a 45-90 minute window. We would have been grid locked without the snow. 80% of all major roads in ATL were treated (mostly sand and gravel) by 6:00pm Tuesday. Most everything y'all have seen was in surrounding county's on area Hwy's that DOT could not get to because of the grid lock.
I just wish the national news would report on how 100's of local restaurant and retail locations opened their doors to citizens that became stranded and offered shelter and fired up the grills to feed anyone that was hungry at no charge!
No, we don't Handel snow very well, but we Damn sure take care of one another when the S hits the fan! "Southern Hospitality" isn't just a slogan, it's our way of Life!
I'm proud to say I live and Thrive in the great South! (Drops mic and walks of stage)

My family got stuck in Atlanta airport in 2002. We had flown from Orlando on a return trip from Disney. Our flight was supposed to be direct but good old Delta decided it was more cost effective to have the NY flights get a layover in their hub, Atlanta. As we sat there waiting for our connecting flight to come in from Sarasota, it started to snow. The connecting plane was late and after boarding us and having us sit on the plane for over an hour they returned to the terminal. By then there was about an inch of snow accumulated and the crapfest started. Taxis weren't running anymore and there was a huge fistfight over the last shuttle that was running to the hotel my brother inlaw reserved. We ended up sleeping in the airport with an 18 month old and my wife's extended family. A fella sat down next to my brother in-law and orated to him about how he just got out of prison for murdering his best friend who slept with his wife! Friggin awesome! Fortunately the National Guard was there in force because it was only a year after 9/11. The Sargent saw my pregnant sister in law and moved us up to a level we had been told to leave earlier, where at least Popeyes stayed open late to serve all of us folks. All I can say is that was one of the worst nights of my life and that I will NEVER fly Delta again.

Getting a little by us too. They say we're in for 6 more weeks actual winter weather here....hope they're wrong. I'm to the point now any big snowfalls or heavy ones and the driveway starts closing in...can't shoot it up over anymore.
