It may be time to replace the cabin refrigerator

Sorry, like @scoflaw said indirectly, I did not plan this thread discussion well.

It's the factory one (I assume). I will get more details next time I am on the boat, assuming that doesn't mean pulling the refrigerator out. I also assumed other's here who have done the project would know. I did check the parts manual prior to posting and couldn't find it. I am told it's a Norcold.

@scoflaw I apologize for wasting your valuable time not being more informed/prepared. Please do not kick me off of here.
Dude, take a pill.

... What you do not have is the context of @Sgrochow PMs with me. So, please respect that before your judge my replies to him. ...

Exactly, and your right, but how would I/we know this? And why it should have stayed there, in the PM, as per your suggestion in your other thread. Not trying to pick an argument, just trying to let you see things as you requested them to be. Your trying to be the bigger person in some of your request's and that's great. Others will bring you down and draw you in, just like in real life, possibly worse.

IF this is my refrig and I am reading this correctly, there is one compressor. @SKybolt do you, or does anyone else know how I can find/test the thermostat before I go down the path of replacing the refrig? Per this PDF the thermostat is the knob at the bottom, which does cause the compressor to come on/go off as I turn it. Are you stating it could be bad, try replacing it? Or something behind it, something it connects to? It's currently turned all the way clockwise. I looked at the wire diagram in the PDF; I wish I had the smarts to understand it, but I don't.

Dude, get the full context before you judge.
No I can judge. You asked a question. Several people have responded. Some with try this. Some with questions. But you seem predisposed to "fight" with certain people, who haven't even commented on the thread.

Bottom line your fridge is not working right. May need replacement. But jiggle some wires, hit with a hammer, check a few things to see if you can breath some new life into it. No reason for the animosity. It's boating for crying out loud. Boating is fun.

Turn it up and see if that help keep it cold. IMO you still need to get back there with a vac and clean the coils, probably have 20 years of crap on them.

The thermostat works by knowing the temp it is sensing. It knows the temp because of the capillary tube. That tube has some gas/liquid that has know characteristics to the temp being monitored. That said, they leak or loose their sensitivity to that temp and "go bad".

Before you do anything, the fridge needs to come out and compressor/part numbers need to be known. You can't charge ahead and not know these answers. You can't order parts without knowing these answers. You need to inspect the working guts of the fridge to know what's going on. Period, not short cuts, we have all been there.

I can't tell you what I have gone through to know how to fix something or get to what needs to be fixed. It's part of the boating game. With boats there are no short cuts. When you short cut it, it breaks even worse.

In the case of a fridge going bad, it's much easier to just replace it. Less of a head ache in the end.

Who you whining about? First it was @scoflaw, then you changed it to @Sgrochow.

Knowing the flames/darts that were going to come my way from folks like @Sgrochow I tried to be super careful how I wrote this thread. Seems I did not communicate well "virtually" despite trying to be careful and chose the correct words - go figure.

Poor @Sgrochow, next time he checks in he'll be like...:eek:...what I do?

Really that’s how you roll?…..
What's that mean? You another smartass? She gets PM's, people throw darts at her, you're just an insensitive brute.:D She likes her Budlight cold is all.

As Orlando says above, in the long run, it is much easier to replace it than to fool around with it if it is original to the boat. Something I always did, because I am OCD, is to put a remote read thermometer in the refrigerator just to keep an eye on it. The 2003 420DA had the original in it and I always wondered when it would go.

This has been posted numerous times, but below is a chart of sizes and models of marine refrigerators.

Thanks, and thanks @SKybolt. I have what I need, you other kids can continue to play on here if you'd like.

Have you defrosted it? Mine doesn’t cool as well if the plates are heavily iced. It is a Norcold DE 0061 and susceptible to icing especially if ambient temp is high.

Cold beer is important. I like the idea the OP had in his first post. Take the beer out of the fridge that doesn't work and put it in the one that does.

And the prick continues to remind me of a post I made in the 3116-3126 that he feels is incorrect, wrong, and that I shouldn't have posted it. I've explained myself, even edited my comment, yet the prick continues.

Sorry gentlemen, at some point I feel like I need to defend myself from this prick.

That's really what has you triggered? Come on man.

I didn’t read all this but if replacement is in the cards, we really like our new Isotherm, especially the freezer section running on its own compressor. I did have to bandaid the seal on the freezer door and will permanently fix it over the winter, but it was a small assembly defect.

freezer holds around 6-8* at 7/8 on the dial. Fridge section is great, too.

I love the look of that one, kind of industrial, thanks for the post.

Assuming you did it yourself, can you PM me regarding the challenges removing the old one, getting the new one into the cabin, anything you learned along the way that could help me. For obvious reasons I want to get off this thread and pretty much all threads here.

I guess the PM's were a lot worse, because you look like the aggressor with what you posted.

Following up with those who asked, I put a temperature sensor in and it's staying around 54°. Freezer is 27°

This is the make and model.
