It looks like Hannah may hit the Carolinas later this week

Look at Ike lined up next though, he looks to be more organized.

Gonna be a fun weekend around here.... oh well - got plenty of beer and food... Glad I had a generator panel installed on the house - probably should test that at some point...

Got a Sea Ray on Lake Erie and where hurricanes are non events. But, got another boat in Charleston (new to me addition) and now I have a whole different perspective on H's.

Of course, I had a few, maybe more than a few mx issues that i needed to take care of before the end of this month --going to DC with the boat and planning on leaving 25 Sep. Anyway, for a month I was thinking--got a few problems to take care of and will get around to it....abuty, Hey Now, this SC doesn't get Hurricanes, it's FL and LA and TX.... so enjoy the Everglades center console down in SC and heck with this other stuff....will get to it sometime.

Well, didnt realize how unprepared I was to move that boat should a storm come. As mentioned, Fay and Gus made SC seem like a great safe place.

Whoops.

Flew down Tuesday and Wednesday was a record day for me in mx repairs and computer resolutions. Heck I had less than 20% fuel capacity on board.

Was going to ride HH out on the boat--never been in one and said, what the heck...ride it out. HH looks less threatening for Charleston (seabrook Isalnd) so instead of the ride out, i flew back to Pittsburgh.

At least with Ike, I got food, fuel and water on board to get the engines running and a going . Can't believe i was sitting there for a month with radar and gps down, vibration in the port shaft, stabilizers acting up, and a whole bunch of other nits, and thinking, hey I'll get someone to take care of all this someday.

Hanna got me going and feeling alot better about da boat.

If H Ike or J look threatening, going down and heading north next day.

Hang on, Travis and good luck! I'll post from down here if I can and let ya know how it goes!

Thanks Matt - should be an interesting weekend. Current track shows it tracking almost on top of both of our areas. Sigh... secure the boat and start drinking Friday afternoon... it'll be over soon...

I don't wish storms on other folks, but after 2 weeks in Florida and preparing for both Fay and Gustav on successive weekends,..........well its someone else's turn.

I have learned a couple of things about storms and storm preparation that I'll pass on:

1. Don't depend on others to take care of your boat for you. Even if they are getting paid for it, they have their own worries and you are not their priority.
2. If in doubt; then haul out (even if insurance won't cover it).

Good luck guys.............

Are you on the Hard now Frank?

Up here in NJ we are forecast for tropical force winds and lot of rain on Saturday. The Atlantic City in water boat show started yesterday. That could be an interesting place to go Saturday afternoon and watch a few hundred brand new boats, tied directly off of each other, in a very crowded harbor.....should provide a few 'what not to do's'....

Well. . it could prove to be an interesting weekend.

I plan to spend quality time on the dock doing asset protection. At least this storm is hitting on the weekend so I don't have to take time off.

Being up in NJ, I don't have to worry like Frank does. I don't mind "taking a turn" once in a while.

My insurance company just called me. They'll pay me up to $1500, and not subject to any deductible, to pluck my boat out of the water and block it up on land.

OK... I just got off the phone with Bluewater... Boat is coming out in the morning and getting blocked up. Pain in the ass... I'm just going to leave it out of the water for a week or two until this crap calms down.

Hit Florida... hit Florida.. come on... hit Florida.

I Just sold a 480 Sedan Bridge

I Decided to go into the Marine brokerage business. I thought, he if a guy was clever enough he can maybe make some money selling boats with little or no overhead.

I call my business katrinaboats.com

I buy boats for next to nothing. I call owners of boats near any potential hurricane or anticipated path of one. All he has to do is haul it out before the next huricane. I offer cash, UP TO $1500.00 for their boats. They all have seemed eager to sell if I say I work for their insurance co. Anyways, I then hire a long haul trucking company to transport the boat out of the area to avoid damage. I then put the ad in craiglist and e-bay at a well below market value enticing a quick sale.

Anyway I call this guy in Virginia and tell him I'll give him $1500.00 for his boat. He said "sounds good to me...but no deductable?" I'm not sure what he means but I say sure.

Anyway I put a local ad in this morning for a 32' Larson and a 32' Four Winns. When the people called I said both were sold but I have a nice 480DB SeaRay that I'd sell at the same price.

It's already sold in less than two hours.

We pick the SeaRay up tomorrow morning sometime.

Like others, will spend the weekend adding and adjusting lines and perhaps make some “Hurricane” mixed drinks. Need to check supply of Vodka and Rum.

Anyone know what the predicted storm surge might be for the wimpy part of the bay?

Yeah. . .this is looking a bit more serious than I first thought.

Definately plan to be on the dock on Saturday to make sure everything stays in place.

The last two times I went through this were pretty OK. I must admit, however, that I don't go through what those in the South go through. A tropical storm doesn't affect the Barnegate Bay like a Category 2 or Category 3 will affect Frank!

Last time we had a bad one I had some flooding, with 3' of water in low parts of the street. Fortunately, the house stayed dry and we only lost power for about 5 hours. I park my car safely up on a hill about a 1/2 mile away if it comes time to leave.

Looks like the latest forecast has this beyotch coming back over the Bay again. Make up your mind people!

Plus, let's not forget about Ike. He looks like his last name could be "Turner" when it comes to kickin' a$$!

Just got an email from our marina. Never got something like this before. Some good advice - thought it would be worth sharing.

Tropical Storm / Hurricane Precautions
With the possibility of Tropical Storm Hannah/Ike/Josephine predicted to be in our vicinity we are asking all boaters to take immediate action and take precautionary measures. With the forecast prediction of strong winds and heavy rain we need to ask all boat owners to inspect, replace or add additional lines to insure the boats to provide adequate protection. Please remove any unsecured items from the docks to eliminate potential damage from items being tossed about from the forecasted strong winds. We would like to emphasis that your vessel be prepared for any power outages that may occur. This is in anticipation of heavy rain, high wind, and possible coastal flooding.

·Monitor the National Weather Service forecast for updates.
·Replace worn/old dock lines and double up on lines.
·All boats need to be secured with a minimum of 2 bow, 2 stern lines as well as spring lines fore and aft.
·If possible you may want to have the boat hauled or relocated further inland for more adequate protection.
·Remove all canvas, enclosures, and cushions.
·Sailboats should remove and store sails below decks.
·Remove all items from the dock box and docks. If your dock box is not secured it should be placed in your boats cockpit.
·Any small boats, dinghy’s, Jet-skis, wave runners, kayaks, etc that are in slips need to be removed.
·Secure all deck items: hatches, antenna’s, windows and all rigging.
·Secure all gear on your vessel
·Check all bilge pump operations, manual and automatic.
·Check/service batteries to ensure full charge.
·Empty refrigerators/freezers.
·Do not stay on board your vessel prior to or during a storm.
·Contact your insurance company to confirm that your policy is in full effect.
·The Marina will not and is not responsible for any vessel.

Do most marinas now have an email distribution for slip owners/renters? I think it's a very good idea.
