Is this too Far

F@#k yea that's going too far. As long as it's not at schoold and he's not bullying anybody then I don't see why they would expell him. What a great world we live in today.

Going too far. Standards need to be maintained during school hours, on school property and at school sponsored events. It's the parent's responsibility outside of those situations.

Going too far… I wonder if the school monitors (snoops?) on the faculty members?

Whatever happened to our Constitutional right of Freedom of Speech? I checked it recently and it did not specify that you could say anything as long as it did not include "swear" words!

Yes I believe they should expel or fire any student, teacher or school employee that has ever used the F word in their life. Then we can shut down all the schools sell off all the school buses. Look at all the tax revenue we can save resulting in lower taxes. Ok granted we will have an even dumber population than we have already but WTF Oops I mean gee Wilickers I'll be dead and buried by then anyhow.

Doesn't necessarily apply to minors. Like the right to vote.....if you are 18 or older.

"How did the school discover that one of its students dared to tweet an offending word during the middle of the night? Simple: Garrett High School's computer system actively tracks the social media presence of its students. Because the student logged on to his account during school hours, the system was able to find and report the foul-mouthed tweet, leading to the expulsion."

Why does the school allow it's students to log on to social media at school? It's as if they are looking for a reason to discipline students. Where I work, we block ALL social media access from within our company network, including visitors using our internet connection.

This is quickly becoming a slippery slope. Schools and employers demanding your Facebook passwords, Law enforcement demanding encrypted computer drive passwords...where will it end?

My take is this...
Does a school or employer have a right to deny access to social media sites from their facilities? YES.
Does a student or employee have a right to privacy concerning their social media outside of school or the workplace? YES

Administrators of many ilk have taken it upon themselves to force their moral standards upon those they adminstrate. Yes they have gone too far. No, it's not likely they will stop unless the adults involved with stand up and defend their rights against these moralistic idiots.

Since the school system has become a day care and parenting has become a lost art I believe any attempt to reel in the behavior and language of young people under the age of 18 is ok with me...within reason of course. If I had used the language and displayed the behavior our high schoolers get away with today my principal and coaching staff would have served my head up on a platter to my parents. We had great respect for our teachers and our environment back then and realized we could not get away with rude behavior. The only supervision and dicipline many children experience today is in the school system. Their social network is through the net and many parents could care less what experiences their children have on these sites. I'm sick and tired of the language I hear in public places coming from fowl mouthed youngsters of all ages. I applaud the school system for trying to keep tabs on this and let someone know that such behavior is not accepted nor tolerated.
If one of my kids had been diciplined for using this language I would have appreciated someone bringing it to my attention. Just like Woodrow said in Lonesome Dove....I don't like rude behavior, I won't tolerate it.

Remember the old saying, it takes a village to raise a child. Everyone must be involved with our young people. If they use bad language on websites and other social media then it will become part of their vocabulary and become their normal way of speaking. Some language and behavior I witnessed at a football game last year would have made a drunken sailor blush.

I'm curious, do you think a school should snoop on a student after hrs and weekends or not? Is it to far?

Hmmm.. . . adults. . . . .

Yes, definately too far. Monitoring tweets? Good gads what is next. GPS trackers implanted in the arm? Oh right. . .it's already in the phones.

I am not even sure a *credit check* of a perspective employee should be fair game during an application process. Facebook passwords. . . .no way.

I would support a company *checking* facebook, or googling an employee. But if an employee keeps his private life, umm, private, then. . . it's private! Note that training I have recieved prohibits asking about not only sexual orientation, but also things like AGE and KIDS during interviews.

Com,
We are in agreement again. Unbelievable!

We may even be in agreement that another Tiki Bar thread has turned yet again "political". :smt043

I disagree :)

We are not talking politics.
We are talking rights of "the man" (be it the school principle or employer) over the rights of the minions.

Yes since all kids spend hours on tweeter and facebook somebody needs to tone down the language. Many parents have no idea what goes on. The constitution guarantees the right to free speech. Not the right to fowl language. I do not believe anyone has the right to prohibit what you say only the manner in which you say it. There are many adjectives and adverbs and nouns other than the word fu**. Learn to use them. Expand your vocabulary! Someday you may have to find a job and sit through a job interview. This is what school is all about. This is what growing up is all about. If your parents do not correct you somebody else will.

Furthermore I would bet this kid has been in trouble for other things in school and his using the F word on tweeter was just the "straw that broke the camels back". What do you want to bet he cussed in class. Here there would be no record or proof, the parents could claim their child was innocent of such behavior. Tweet something and it becomes public knowledge. My daughter teaches high school and I cannot believe the stories she tells of behavior and language used inside school buildings.

Maybe Joe should have been suspended…..

Someone brought up tracking the kids, a school uniform company is talking about putting chips in uniforms now, something like you would put in your pets. As to the school, if they are checking up on the kids they are also checking up on faculty. I don't think the school should be doing that when it is not on their time, I do think the parents should be keeping up with what their children are doing, that is what we do in my family. I also agree that the children of today have horrible mouths, they need to learn to speak properly and without the slang, profanity or whatever you want to call it, and that falls on the parents for not training them properly at home.

See, that's where a decent teacher's union should step in. "No, you cannot have the passwords to the teacher's facebook accounts".
