Since the economy appears to be headed towards a recession I thought that it may be a good time to get a good deal on a new boat.

I received a quote on a new 2008 210 Select with full options: Bow/Cockpit cover, docking lights, batt switch, auto fire ext., stereo package, etc.

The dealer said that the boats MSRP was $48,900. He could sell it to me for $46,878 with a $9,000 rebate which would bring it to $37,878 pre tax/tag..

Any thoughts?

A $9000 rebate............are you sure that is correct? While I haven't any information on Sea Ray's current incentive offerings that seems very high for that boat. Typically you might expect that type of a rebate on a 260 Dancer but not on a 210 Select.

Regardless, do some math on your own. Most dealers will give 15- 20 percent off MSRP without batting an eyelash and doing any negotiation. So on that basis, 20% off $48,900 would be $9780. Add the $9000 rebate money to that for a total of $18,780 discount and they are certainly not offering you that.

I think you need to verify that incentive money first so you can see where your dealer is comming from with his price.

Go to the SeaRay website and play with build and price and see how the numbers come out there since you have looked at the boat and know what is in it, you can check the standard options against what is in it and see how the website prices it out.

I suspect the rebate is a fantasy. . . . .but it doesn't matter. All that matters is the *bottom line price*.

Personally, if you are looking for recession pricing: I suspect it is too early to tell, although boat prices have been soft from what I hear.

Biggest question: What engine is in this boat? What about the trailer? To my eyes, $37K is expensive for a 21' bow rider; but three years ago when I was shopping that kind of price was not out of line.

I was going to ask the same question about the engine and trailer.

I got a 06 240Sundeck loaded with 5.0MPI and trailer, title tag tax out the door price was around 48,000 I bought mine in Dec of 06 shortly after a boat show. So based on me getting 5' more with a swim platform and pumpout bathroom it doesn't appear your getting a very good deal, but this is my first boat so what do I know.

Seems about right to me. Our '08 205 sport, with every option except tower came to $34k. Sirius sat radio, 260hp engine, canvas, premier stereo, drop in ski tow, b seating plan, etc...

Just figure out what's it going to be worth in 4-5 years when you're ready to move again.
A Year Old "07 with 110 hours on it Would be in the $20's right now I bet. Food for thought. Yeah I know that "new" and your's and only your's is a good feeling, but after my last two purchases of boats (both at 93, and 94 hours respectfully) Is sure is good knowing that initial Depreciation curve is already bitten off.

Here's what my dealer has
Lake Union Searay 210 Select

I also know of a '04 185BR with 90 hours for Low $20's
Either way best of luck

Very good points from all of you. The 9,000 rebate was not all "rebate". I got separate numbers from the Sea Ray rebate and how much more they were cutting the price (I just combined them). The broken down price is in my office until I return on Monday.

The trailer was a Shorelander Galvanized w/ brakes. The motor was a 5.0 MPI Merc.

I typically would prefer to buy a slightly used boat and take advantage of the upfront depreciation. As for recession... I predict that by late March they will be giving boats away.

In that case. . .take 25% off the top. . then apply rebate. . and see where you are.

Frankly, when I was looking at 21 foot bowriders I was very hard pressed to find any used boat under $25K that wasn't a complete skankfest. Which is why I never bought one :)
