Is there a database with basic information on models?

A number of years ago on this forum there was a discussion on live aboard boats and Sea Rays specifically. The consensus was that there were really no good live aboard models made by Sea Ray until you started getting into the 50+ foot range….unless you are a minimalist and very single.

I saw the mid 80s 340 Sundance mentioned. I owned an ‘89 for about 4 years. I loved the boat but as a live aboard? Uh, uh. For us guys 6’2” the bed was awesome. It’s wider than a king. (‘87-‘89) The draw back for me was there was no sofa. That will be the same for most all Sundancers under 50’. You had a dinette in the salon but but it wasn’t a very comfortable place to lounge and watch tv. We did that in the bed. The late ‘80s 440 aft cabin would be a decent compromise and they can be found reasonably priced and you can find them with gas or diesel power.

My wife and I used to take our 340da to San Francisco Bay every year for 5-6 days every year and that is about as long as I would want to do on that boat.

We decided we wanted to retire on a boat and cruise for 5 years and we looked for the right boat/home for about a year. We never even considered a Sea Ray. We ended up buying a Taiwanese-built 52’ KhaShing Cockpit Motoryacht. It had a salon with a sofa and 2 arm chairs, a dinette, a galley you could actually make a meal in, 2 staterooms and 2 heads and the head in the master stateroom was so big that it had a bathtub. Add an aft deck, cockpit and a fly bridge and it had all we needed. The boat was a very well maintained 1984 and we only paid $100,000. It was roomy, comfortable and perfect size for the 2 of us and even overnight guests occasionally.

I guess what I’m saying is don’t limit yourself to a Sea Ray. While they’re great boats and I love them I don’t think they build a decent live aboard….for me.

Hm. Guess I need to keep an eye out for an aft cabin/sedan bridge boat then. Something in the 370-440 range. I will just have to learn to deal with the wind loading a flybridge gives. Not quite sure yet when they made each size as they seem to jump around a lot year to year. May go through the Sea-ray link someone posted and go year by year to see when they offered what. There are a few Carvers and Silverton or two within a few hundred miles, but once you add shipping costs they are not really economical. Thanks for all the advice.
