I have read about using polish followed by a wax but is this really necessary? I have also seen those of you who use only polish (seems Yacht Brite Pro Polish is a favorite) with no wax application after. So I am looking for a concensus here as I am about to tackle my 205 sport this weekend.

Thanks

That's a personal preference kind of thing. 50% of boaters don't do either. I use Starbrite PTFE polish, and I think it looks and feels great all by itself. However, I would need to reapply it about every 2 months to keep the same level of shine. I cover that with 2 coats of Meguires Flagship and the shine lasts much longer.

Where's Jeremy?

Most polishes don't offer any protection, only produce the shine you'll want to cover with a Wax or Poly to repell the water and provide protection.
The Starbrite with PTEF offers a good shine and the PTEF is the protecting agent.
Many here swear by many different Waxes as their protection, but I'm not sure you'll get a concensus.

I think the important thing is that whatever you use has the ability to help protect the gelcoat from UV rays. If you don't protect the gelcoat from UV, fading will obviously occur.

Starbrite polish claims to protect from UV while the wax claims to make the shine last longer.

I'd say if you're comfortable with the polish alone, you should be good to go.

If you put wax over the yacht bright it will get smudgy. I think if it is a pure polish then it needs wax but for some of these new products you don't need to wax over them.

Yup to all of the above. To say it simpler: Polish makes it shiny, wax protects it... unless you're using a polish that contains UV inhibitors - an "all-in-one". Then that's all you'll need.

If you're a traditionalist, then as far as "normal" wax goes, Collinite #885 offers the best protection out there. But, you'll get a work-out putting it on.

Thanks guys. I think I'll try the Starbrite with PTEF alone and see how it goes. Appreciate all your comments!

Here is another thought for you........do one side with Finessee It polish from 3M and cover that with Flagship for protection. Both products are very easy to use. Do the other side with one of the other products suggested above. I've tried all kinds of stuff and have settled on 3M and Flagship. Easy to apply and remove and the shine lasts all season in our situation.

Haha... I didn't mention it, but step 1 was the Finesse It with a rotary buffer, step 2 was the Starbrite (PC7424), and step 3 was the Meguires (also PC7424). She looks awesome

Throw on some Johnsons floor polish with a mop and go boating.....don't waste your time listening to all these folks. You have better things to do.

You really need to update your Sig pic, unless you still have snow on the ground

It's 48 degrees here now. We can get snow up until the 4th of July.

If you trailer your boat, there is a great product out there that I use every time I pull out the boat and wipe it down. It is called Bass Boat Saver. It's an all in one product that protects and shines with just a spray on-wipe off. If you google Bass Boat Saver, you will find it. It's about as easy as you gan get.

Funny Dave S...you sound just like my wife! She complains about spending more time cleaning the boat than actually using it on the water!
