Hi ,
I'm replacing the two batteries in my new-to-me 1977 240 weekender. It has a 260 Mercruiser. When I got it it had 2 type 24 starting batteries. Is it ok to put one starter & one deep cycle in? Do I really need a starter battery or could/should I go with two deep cylces?

There is a battery switch.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Do you have a battery isolator switch?

Yes. MM

I have one starting battery for my generator and 2 golf cart batteries for the house and starting my engines. I don't combine the batteries but could if I wanted using the MBSS. I do have a smart charger and have never had a battery problem since I made this switch 3 years ago.

Yes, it is fine. Yes, you can put in two D.C. batteries. Try to keep the MCA at about 700 or above.

I have 2 group 27 deepcycle and a group 35 crank battery on an isolator
in my 78 240
may switch to group 31 deepcycles next season

Thank you all for the great advice. It looks like I have a few alternatives to consider.

I have one starting and one deep cycle. My smart charger knows what each battery needs. The starting battery will recover charge quicker than the deep cycle. A boat ride will charge the starting battery but the deep cycle likes being on the charger overnight. I would not want two deep cycle batteries unless on shore power every night or every few days overnight, Mike.
