My wife is learning how to drive my 270 slx. Unfortunately she was practising docking and she accidentally floored it in reverse.

We hit the dock going about 5 mph. Now there is a small dent in the boat or I should say the rear swim platform and the metal retaining band. I took it to Marinemax where I dock it and they estimated it would cost about 1800 including tax.

Is this high, or is it about par for boats.

That's a hard question to answer. The only way to know is to get a few more estimates. I'm sure MM is more than qualified but there are a lot of good marine mechanics, techs and gel experts. Shop around before committing to anyone.

Post some pics of the damage and I'm sure someone can give you some good advice.

Sounds high for a "dent". Are they doing the work or subbing it out. Get a couple more estimates. MM does back up their work and they are an authorized Sea Ray dealer.

rubrail around swim platform is easily replaceable and for fiberglass repair - local shop will be probably cheaper to use, but they may have a problem to get original sea ray gelcoat

It all depends on the individual doing the work. I would prefer to see the individuals work and have a conversation with them.
