So the Admiral and I have been mildly discussing upsizing. We love our 410DA but we end up with a large number of people, she MUST feed the entire crowd and we are always packed like vagabonds. In the opinion of this wise (and sometimes wise a$$) group, is it worth going from a 410DA to a 460DA? We looked at a 510DA with 3406E CATs but it was very poorly maintained. We love the extra size of both staterooms and the storage in the cockpit. The galley is about the same. If not a 460, it would have to be a 510DA with the right engines or even a 540DA. I don't want 3196's so I am limited by that. If I don't upsize I may be forced to get a new house to make the Admiral happy. I don't really want to move the the place she is looking at does have a dock, hmmm....

What's the difference in the value of your current boat and the cost of the boat(s) you're considering?

Will you get more use out of your boat if you upsize? Will you be happier when you're on the water if you upsize? Will the additional cost of the upgrade keep you up at night and prevent you from enjoying your new toy? Which model years are you looking at? Will maintenance costs be an issue if you have to go older to go bigger?

Those are the things that I would be thinking about. All that being said, if you can afford it and it makes you both happy then go for it!

Sandy

If you are going to make good use of the space and your boating is constrained by the boat you have, then it sounds like time to move up, Ken. I just made the opposite decision. Moving up would be great fun, but we're not constrained by the boat we currently have so... why bother? It's just more fiberglass to wash and wax, IMHO.

Do you really want to? Does the idea of a new boat seem exciting or are you anticipating having it? If not... there's your answer.

I typed for a half hour with my answer to this and at the end was told I didn't have the right to post it! ugggh. lost the whole thing

We use the boat a lot but are often space constrained (have you met my wife?). We enjoy trips down the coast and want to be comfortable doing that too. The Pacific North of Santa Barbara can be huge. I see 4' maybe 6' on the East Coast being fairly normal where we have 6' to 8' and well above that routinely here. Comfort would be good since we often stay for 3 or 4 days (or more) at a time at anchor. The extra capacity and room would be nice. The original question was is it worth to make a jump from a 410 to 460. I know it's worth it to jump to over 50'!

I actually love your boat other than the engines. What are your likes, loves and wishes when it comes to that model?

Love the boat, and feel 460 is not enuf "move up" for you. Same boat just a little bigger. 510 or 540 is where you should look. You will find that many boats of all makes in the 50' range and early 2000's have 3196's. When I discussed this with Rusty he said " less than 10% of them had issues...Way less than 10%" Mine have close to 1700 hours, run strong, clean and are economical. They will cruise the boat effortlessly faster than I want to go. I have numerous friends with Sea Ray, Egg Harbors, and other quality boats that have 3196 1999 to 2003 ish. All of ours had all the updates done to them

Ken, have you considered a sedan bridge boat? Lots more room, especially when you entertain large crowds. We've had as many as 22 guests on board and they're not stepping all over each other because there are 3 places for people to migrate to.

Ken - you may have seen this, they upgraded this 54DA to C12's which should make all your concerns on the 3196 go away. This has been for sale for a year or more - prices is in cad so this is $280k usd.
The boat is local to me but I do not know it or the owner - it looks in great condition in the picstho - I have been tempted to look at her but resisted so far

As you have seen a lot of people including myself have gone from a 420/44 to a 48 which would be the same jump for you, and I have no regrets. The 460 is a big boat, if the numbers make sense and it will improve your lifestyle, do it!

Funny, sent the broker an email yesterday afternoon . You can go look at it for me maybe? Not that I have looked but it's just over 1,000 nautical miles from where it is to my marina...

Hell, we have had that many in my cockpit! Not very comfortably though (understatement). We would not discount a bridge but love the Dancer cockpits.

I'm in Coal Harbour tomorrow as I start my 4.5 week vacation up to Desolation Sound and (hopefully) the Broughtons. If it's there I'll take a look for you, looks like the Freedom Marine office might be close by.

that would sweet, thanks

Buy the house with the dock. Best of both worlds.
Ugghhh, it needs a complete remodel inside, new Windows, air conditioning, new back yard, add to dock to fit boat, etc. getting to old for this stuff!

Ken, if you go for the one in Vancouver I just happen to know someone who has experience in taking boats from that area down to your marina. He works cheap, cooks, stands watch and even does the dishes after meals!
