Boat Info
240 WE SeaRay
Engines
Twin 165 MerCruisers
Hi All,
I have a 1972 SeaRay 240 WE 248.with twin 165 Mercruiser engines. The Port engine has a loud slapping sound. I thought it was a lifter, I replaced all lifters and push rods. Noise remains. The Starboard engine pumps oil about a quart per hour.
The condition of the boat is fair it is a survivor. The liner in the cabin has been replaced. That is the only thing done to the boat. I have an estimate for $10, 000 to rebuild both engines. I am not sure I want to put that much money in a '72. What are your thoughts?

Sell it and move on unless you are attached to it and think you will get several years of use out of it.
Carpe Diem

that loud slapping sound could be the flaps inside your exhaust risers. there are flaps in there that close when backing so the water doesnt come in, they are metal and have a rubber 'ring' (for lack of a better term) around them so they dont make that noise, which eventually wears away. If that is the issue its nothing. One of mine is dong it. Get a 2nd / 3rd opinion before spending BIG money on a non-item.

That sound could also be from a broken piston skirt. When one of them breaks, the piston rocks in the cylinder bore as it passes top dead center. It will eventually score the cylinder wall to the the point that it needs to be sleeved or scrapped.

Thank you all for your input. This is very helpful. The boat has been in the family for 20 plus years but I think it is time to move on. We have decided to donate it but would love to see it go to good home. If you know of someone interested in a project boat with trailer the price is right.

I used to have a 74’ 240 with the twin 165’s. The engines are pretty common. Might be able to find a couple used engines cheap. Mine had good engines but I just got tired of the smaller boat. I really like to 300 weekender much better.
