I recieved a brochure from boat US today boasting about ll their services and discounts.

Are they real and worth it?

I have a 1996 with small children so I would have some comfort in a tow service but I am sort of a newbie to boating so I am not sure what other members recommend.

Thoughts??

Good piece of mind as well as discounts on dockage & fuel at lots of marina's. Kinda just in case as water towing is so costly & ungroundings are also. Remember, there are two kind of boaters: those that have run aground & those that won't admit it.

Check the tow coverage area for Boat US vs. Sea Tow. One may offer better coverage than the other.

Check your insurance....mine has unlimited towing insurance. If I have to call Sea Tow, I get reimbursed.

IMO it is the best money I spend all year for the boat I have the unlimited towing I have had to only use it one time but the bill would have been almost a grand BoatUs is just about the first bill I pay in the new year for the boat. Just my 2 cents

Definitely worth it. It could cost a few hundred dollars to get towed off a sandbar. One soft grounding and it pays for itself. If your insurance covers towing, check to see if there is a deductible Also, does the insurance company view towing as a claim? If they do, you can get dropped after a couple of claims. Rather save the insurance for bigger things and use boat us or another tow service in your area for towing.

I used Boat US tow service once and will never go without it again.
I was on a friends boat out of state and used my coverage with no questions asked.
$554 bill.

I refinanced my boat through BoatUS so there's yet another reason to join.

Also, with many marinas, you get a Boat US discount. Our marina gives me a $0.25 per gallon discount on my gas. With my tank, that can be a huge savings. :smt038

In south Lake Michigan area bad weather set in and a distress call was made. A grounding and a storm. The CG was already on a higher level rescue and sent the BoatUS folks to the scene. The boater had a $1200 bill. Don't think the CG will save your bacon.

Thank you for the great advice gents..Apparently, Boat US does not really have great tow or marina coverege where we are in CT. I will check with SeaTow and insurance coverage as well.

Regardless, it sounds like Boat US is a no brainer....

Yes, Boat U.S. is worth it. Though the towing package is cheap insurance for any boater, one of their real strengths is they effectively lobby congress on behalf of boaters. For that reason alone every boater should be a member of Boat U.S.

This list reads like a Boat/US brochure.............!

But one reason/advantage is not mentioned, and it may be the most important one that affects us all. Boat/US has a lot of influence in Congress and they do have a big effect on legislation affecting boaters. May of the stupid and senseless proposed bills that could really hurt us (like the one prohibiting pumping bilge water overboard.) are defeated thanks to Boat/US's efforts on behalf of its members.

I have to be a member to have their insurance, otherwise there is little benefit in our inland lake. I think their tow coverage is a whole $50 with the minimum package, lot of good that would do.

YES YES & YES! Not only for towing, they will bring you gas, and fix your flat tire on the side of the road. Discounts at marinas, fuel, and West Marine as well. I pay 130 a year and covers trailering and on the water.

We have towing through Boat U.S. and I will probably renew.
I did see someone make a case for putting that same money away and self insure, but I like the peace of mind. More importantly, the Admiral likes the peace of mind.

No worries. Frank is like E.F. Hutton. When he speaks, everyone listens!

Yes, $50 worth of coverage wouldn't pay for them launching the tow boat. $50 of premium buys us what could be $1000 worth of tow.

I think they are running a sale now, too.

Unlimited Freshwater Towing$34.00 – BoatUS pays the bill within a towing service area for tows in fresh water. This is for all inland lakes and rivers, and the Great Lakes, but not applicable in Florida. Provides 100% payment for a tow at sea to your home dock or repair facility. 100% for a tow from a restricted use dock to your home dock or repair facility. 50% payment for a tow from your home dock or mooring to a repair facility.
