Is A Garmin 741xs worth $600 More Than The 740s?

If the price was the same it would be easy, but $600 is a big difference. Just what does one get for that money?

Hi Mike,
Not sure of all of the benefits, but I believe it has a faster processor for faster refreshing of the screen. Additionally, I know that the 741 series has the wireless capability in it natively (does not need the $200 adapter) that allows your chartplotter to communicate with your ipad/BluechartMobile. Theoretically according to some of the panbo.com articles and garmin press releases, there's more coming that will be wirelessly interfacing too. I would go for the 741 series if I didnt already have the 740.

Actually looks like there are a lot of other new features... HD sonar... Pinch-to-zoom, 10Hz gps which updates your position 10x a second vs once a second etc...

The xs model has Chirp Sounder (a baby Chrip version) - that alone is worth a lot...

I would say yes. No need to start a generation behind for $600.
