I have a Clarion XMD1 AM/FM CD Player with CD Changer Control. It is hooked up to a Clarion DC625 6 Disc CD Changer. I have 6 speakers so I know one output from the head unit is gong through a Marine Audio MAA120-2 Amplifier to power 4 of the speakers in the cockpit area I believe. The two speakers in the cuddy must be powered by the head unit itself. It also has a Clarion Wired Remote model M201RCS. I’m happy with the functionality of this, however I’m wondering if there is an interface device available to use the same unit to play music from an IPOD?

You are correct on all of your connections. Clarion does have an iPod adapter but I don't think it's compatible with your head unit. The part number is CCA670.

Here's the link to Clarion's marine site:

Anyone used something like this?

I remember on my previous boat that had a Sony head unit that I was able to hook up a device from XM Radio that sent the single right to the head unit. It must have went into the CD changer input of the head unit or something. I had to run all the controls from the IPOD itself, but that was fine.

It might have been something like this? I suppose the Sony had iBus capability?

The Clarion iPod adapter does not work with the XMD1. You would think Carlion would have made it compatible, but that might have bit into new unit sales. I ended up using an FM modulator that plugs into the the radio antenna plug (and then radio antenna plugs into that). This requires 12v, so I bought a Sea Ray rocker switch, and mounted in the empty Accessory DC switch spot. wiring was easy as the power and ground are right there. I did have to drill a 1/4" hole in the storge area below the stereo to run the wire from the modulator to the iPod. The brand I used was AUdiovox, but there are several available.

You might shop around as the one I got was pretty basic and while the volume can be control by the dash remote, none of the other iPod functions are available. You might be able to find something more geared towards iPod that could give you control and iPod charging ability.

My cable has charging capability! Just have to remember to bring the ipod!

What are you using? On the older XMD1 stereo you are limited to FM modulators, or electronic surgery on the connector between the head unit and the CD deck. At the time I made my Clarion iPod friendly, all I could find were modulators that provided music and no other iPod functions. Is there one available now that can provide iPod charging

If anyone is ever interested I did the electronic surgery to get use of my IPOD and CD Changer with the use of the old XMD1 Clarion head unit. Requires some soldering, a couple of relays, and some other things depending on your installation plan. I used an IPOD harness that sends out a line out signal and also charges it. I hooked up the harness to an empty accessory switch (FWD ACC) on the dash from the EIM to charge the IPOD and also goes to the relays needed. When I turn that FWD ACC switch on it switches over the relays which powers down the CD Changer and the stereo goes to ACCS mode to listen to the IPOD - and it charges it at the same time. The installation took all day - mostly because of routing the wires. But, I didn't have to permanently tear anything apart and only had to drill one hole to get the wires to the elec. panel/stereo in the cabin.

Rather than surgery, why not step up to a newer head unit like the XMD3. It has an Aux in and will work with the older remotes? Under $100 on E-bay, I've seen them go for $50. Uses the same wiring harness too. You can swap one out in 10 minutes easily.

I guess the ultimate question is if the XMD3 would still work with the older wired remotes...If so its a good option to go to the XMD3. However I think those are CNET capable which means it wouldn't work with the CD changer. I couldn't get a straight answer one way or the other so I did the modification which is pretty cheap.

My bad, the XMD3 will work with the older remotes but then you lose the C-Bus cd-changer. I have seen a Cbus to CeNet box but it's $150. Sorry for the bad info.
