iphone VS Droid

Have a HTC Droid....love it, would go to an Iphone, but A. No flash and B. love my turn by turn Nav....Anyway.....for all your boaters who have yours in a wet inviroment, here is a company that will make your Iphone, Droid or any other phone nearly totally waterproof for about $60-$80. Saw this on TV and the guy actually dropped in a glass of water (Not Recommended) but a demonstration of how good this coating is....coats inside and out.

The lifeproof case I have is completely water proof http://www.lifeproof.com/

They also make an ipad case.

I saw a demo of someone dunking his Liquipel coated phone in water and the phone got fried. Liquipel responded by saying that you're not supposed to submerge your phone after it has been Liquipelled.....what the heck??? That's what they advertise.

Didn't adobe, the creator of flash, end up abandoning mobile flash last year because it just didn't work on mobile devices?

You are correct, Flash is dead. I don't even have Flash on my Macs. If a site uses Flash then they lose my eyeballs. Seriously, who really uses the Flash argument against iPhone/iPad? Do you really browse that many restaurant websites on your phone? Restaurants are the only ones still using flash.

Hmmm, seems Steve was right... AGAIN.

I really looked hard a the iPhone on my last upgrade. I decided on the Samsung Charge for these reasons:

User can change out battery
User can upgrade memory.
Bigger display.
4G Network . This is huge , I never connect to WiFi as it is so fast.
Awesome free Navigation.
Overall works better as a phone. This may be network dependent . Have many friends who love it and hate it for phone quality.

Both of my daughters have iPhones and love them. They always sound good on the Verizon network.

Lots of sites I hit with the iPad cannot be displayed because of lack of Flash. Never an issue with the Droid.

when iPhone gets 4g I may reconsider it, although the battery and memory issues is a big deal.

Battery life on any 4g phone is not stellar. I have to charge mine Dailey .

iPhone 4s battery life is definately an issue for me. Daily charging is almost mandatory unless I start restricting my usage. The difficulty in replacing batteries is a real downer.

I have not figured out the iCloud storage -> you only get a few Gig for free; a small fraction of the actual phone capacity. Plus, if you have an "issue", invariably you won't have wi-fi coverage.

The Apple system is the definition of a "closed system". This is simultaneously Apples greatest strength and greatest weakness. Strength in that Apple can ensure quality control of devices and apps. Weakness in that they really do limit some areas of development. The most obvious example was phone tethering in the older OS's.

As for the DRM -> seems to me that they have lightened up on this over the years. Most of my music is imported from discs, but I have not had an issue making good MP3's from my apple stuff for use on other devices.

Overall, the apple stuff is very good despite the few quirks. While I find the MAC's unreasonably high priced; the iphones and ipads seem to be competitively priced and are worth having.

If I remember correctly, you swore you were never going to buy an apple product, especially the iphone. What changed your mind?

Wow, I sure am in the minority here! Last September was my first step into the "smart phone" world. My cousin is an AT&T store owner and we went through her. She recommended an Android based phone. I absolutely love my LG Thrill 3D 4G phone. My wife got the HTC Inspire 4G. I came from a background of always having owned PC's, and worked on PC's...Windows at home; Linux, Windows at work.

For Christmas my mom bought my daughter an iPod Touch. My other daughter received a Kindle Fire. With the Fire, I can use the same micro-USB chargers we have around the house for our phones. Any app I download from the Amazon AppStore is available on either of our phones, and available on the Kindle Fire. I can download something for my daughter and then go to her Fire and install it.

When it comes to the iPod, no luck. Uses it own stupid proprietary charger. We only have one, and it's getting flaky. My daughter has to download her own apps on the device; no sharing with ours. If we purchase something from the app store, it's available on all of the devices. Except the iPod, and then we have to find that app and pay again.

I also have our phones setup with an app (Sweet Home) that as soon as we walk into Wi-Fi range of our home network, it automatically transfer all new photos and videos we've taken or downloaded to the photos folder of our PC. I have been unable to find an app to do that for the iPod Touch...

I also have apps running on our phones (Cheetah Sync) to enable transfer of files the other direction...from the PC to the phone. We drag/drop music files, pictures, TV shows, etc. to a folder on the PC and they then automatically are transferred to the phone. This is what I use for the boat; process and drag some TV and movies to my phone and then take the phone and use it's HDMI out to plug into the TV on the boat. Haven't found any way to transfer our .mp3 music files to the iPod Touch...

Not to mention the great Google Maps Navigation feature; I threw out all my auto GPS's and even use the android phone while hiking in the woods with the 'Backpacker GPS' app.

So I would say an iWhatever has no place in an environment without other iDevices. It's a standalone device that has little value in that case. Unless I am just not good at searching the Apple app store and finding the apps I need, and in that case, help would be appreciated.

Now that's a strong endorsement for Droid!! Thanks Tom, I was beginning to think that all Droids were plagued with operating issues but yours obviously are not. I'm still leaning towards an iPhone just because my wife will be getting one too and she still doesn't know how to text or get her messages on her old flip phone!! This way I will be able to walk her through some of the processes if I am utilizing the same phone. It also seems that the iPhone is more user friendly and that is something I think that she will appreciate as will I.
My main concern from what I've read here and the article that Turtle linked is battery life. Do you think the iPhone 5 will have better battery life since that seems to be the main issue with their phones now?

Thanks again everyone for the great input. I really appreciate it!

iCloud, iTunes. signup, download, enjoy.

battery life is an issue with all smartphones. it all depends on how you use them. doesn't matter if it's a droid or an iphone, they are all using the same batteries. The more you use certain features like video, gps, push notifications etc... that all takes power. No one knows when the iphone 5 will come out. Everyone swore it was last year at this time, and it's still not out. Rumors are June, or Oct. who knows, who cares. I have the iphone 4, the admiral has the 3GS, I can't get her to upgrade to the 4S because she likes the phone she has. When it does come out, whatever revolutionary battery it may have will be sucked up by whatever new processor comes out. All of the companies shoot for day of usage and engineer the phones to utilize whatever the battery has. If a battery can last twice as long, they'll pack twice as much into the phone. Since the iphone 1 to the 4S, they've all had the same battery life.

If I remember correctly, you swore you were never going to buy an apple product, especially the iphone. What changed your mind?

Assuming I am remembering correctly. . . . . .you do not quite remember correctly. . . .. .

. . .I am anti-MAC, *primarily* because of the initial cost. Gary and others always say that if you add up all the other stuff you buy, and the time you invest in a PC, the MAC is a good value. From my perspective, however, as a PC user, I *KNOW* that my spending level on the PC's is quite low, and I am not spending any time at all tinkering with the system.

. . . I was not an iPhone user until late last year; bascially I was balking at the cost of the data plan and the limited data storage. What changed there? Three things;
1) Phone memory got cheaper. (basically, dropped the phone cost $100)
2) I was able to get a company discount on the data plan, and the new iMessage feature eliminates the need for a text messaging plan.
3) Wireless hotspot capability is now built in. I used to use a Virgin Mobile month-to-month MiFi mobile hotspot. The great thing about that device was that I only needed it for six months a year, I only paid for it six months a year. The bad part was that I rarely got more than 0.5mb bandwidth where I use it. The 4s has tethering, and I often see 2-4mb data speed at home; and 1-2mb data speed where I boat. The cost of $40-$45/4gb of data per month may work for me (will find out in a few months)

I also bought the iPad2 when it came out last year. Deciding factors were two-fold;
1) The apple tablets were price competitive with other tablet devices.
2) Amazon Kindle books are not platform specific. Buy a book on Amazon -> and you can read it on any device.

Regarding MP3's (responding to a different post):
iTunes works with MP3's just fine. If you put MP3 files in your music folders, iTunes will import the files just fine. Once in iTunes. . .you can't really tell the difference between mp3's and the apple AAC files. I have my PC setup to automatically rip CD's to MP3 format; the only music I have in MP4/AAC format are those few titles I buy directly off of iTunes. (and then I usually convert those files to mp3 format). Before I bought my first iDevice, I tested this functionality to make sure it worked.

Regarding Battery Life;
I hear you on "one day life". Quite a change from my pre-smartphone days where 2-3 days between charging is not an issue. I had a few buddies upgrade from a 3Gs to a 4s. They all report that battery life is shorter on the new phone. Turtle is correct in that when you travel, you tend to hit the phone harder. Flight tracker apps; Traffic tracker apps; Urban Spoon; Email; phone calls; playing tunes on a plane, researching hotels. . .. all suck down the battery. Bottom line is that if you "stay connected"; you better have a car and wall charger in your bag.

Regarding iCloud;
5gb of storage for free? Pfffft. That's not even a single thumbdrive.
$100/yr for 50gb? No thank you.
Although this is similar for other cloud services. . . .until we are talking 5-10/TERRAbyte storage, cloud storage is basically vaporware.

Actually that's not true, Woody was still old in 1985.

But see, why should I need to install, obtain an account and use iTunes, just to transfer music from my PC to the iPod Touch? Seems like overkill. And it's still a one-off solution to support that single device. I get it though. With an Apple device you either need to be all-in, or all-out. There's no middle ground where everyone can be happy.

You didn't have to download and install software to transfer stuff to your droid? Yes, you had to. It should just magically appear on the device?

Turtle is exactly correct...you need some sort of app/software to transfer music, photos, etc. You bought into the Android ecosystem and it's working for you. Apple is also an ecosystem....a better one though. If you buy Apple devices they all just work. iCloud, Photostream, iTunes Match, iTunes, etc. All you need is a single Apple ID and everything is magically in sync.....iPhone, iPad, iMac, Macbook, Apple TV. No thought, no tinkering, it just works.
