iPad - Thoughts

No multitasking or background operations make it a loser. No webcam either. It's just a big iPod Touch. I'll wait until the second iteration after they address all the complaints about its shortcomings. Just like cut/copy/paste on the iPhone.

I think the market thought the same thing about the iPad, apple dropped near $10 today.

I'm most disappointed that the thing has an iPhone interface and not more of a Mac interface. I think it means the same locked-down control over what the user can do as exists with the iPhone.

Love the size and weight and love the idea of sitting at anchor on a quiet morning, reading the paper...assuming it gets delivered.

I also play guitar and have a couple of binders of sheet music that I play at the campfire and on the boat. It'd be great to put all that on an iPad.

I'll probably end up getting one. Key question, if I've already got an iPhone with a data plan, can I plug the iPad into it for the 3G access?

I heard a person call the iPad the "Obama of computing devices... lots of hype and excitement and then a total letdown when unveiled."

Whats in a name?

Got a response from Navionics

"Apples recent announcement includes the publication of technical details that will now allow us to investigate potential compatibility. At this time, Navionics is certainly looking into it!"

I believe it has a mini SIM card different then the one in the iPhone so you can't swap them between the two to use one data plan...

Now... If you have an iPhone with a data plan you can jailbreak it and use the iPad tethered to the iPhone then just like a regular WiFi connection...

Doesn't look like it runs Flash applications. There is apparently a dust up between Adobe and Cupertino.

The iPhones/Touch have never run Flash either. That's yet another shortcoming for the iPad. I can see using it to watch streaming video but almost everybody uses Flash -- Hulu, Amazon, etc.

I see opportunities in vertical markets -- doctors, insurance adjusters, etc.

come on apple, support flash you turd balls.

I'm waiting for a tablet whose manufacturer does not have a control freak as their CEO. Maybe Google will produce a good open source tablet for 300 bucks which has access to millions of books and thousands of magazines?

I'm probably dreaming.

yeah, you're dreaming. go back to sleep.

You don't have to jailbreak your phone to tether it. You just have to install a config file. See: http://www.legalpracticepro.com/10-steps-turning-iphone-into-modem-laptop/
As long as you haven't upgraded to iPhone software 3.1 this works. I had to downgrade the phone to do it and I use the tethering features regularly.

Now if you can use bluetooth as a network connection on the iPad, you can tether to the iPhone to connect to the internet.

This thing has gotten as much unwarranted hype as Tim Tebow. I've heard more about what it can't do than what it can do. Sounds to me like an iphone on steroids. I don't know what the monthly cost are, but I'll bet its rediculous. Thanks but no thanks.

Gotta go with Turtle on this one.

I have a 2G touch, and the lack of flash (plus the general slow speed) makes web browsing an occassionaly -not primary- task. If this thing could properly multitask, and had the flash support. . .I would probably be all over this.

I will wait and see what an eventual OS upgrade brings us. For my 2G touch, the OS3 upgrade brought bluetooth functionality. . which really made the gizmo much better.

Well looks like the microSIM that the iPad uses is the same as a regular sim just smaller. There was a blog post on shaving down a normal SIM to put in an iPad..

Yes you are right on Rubber Duckie with the isp file to tether. I just have so much crap on my phone it takes forever to restore.... blackra1n is just so much quicker.

Although I'm looking forward to the Android devices, I bit the bullet and got an iPad 32gb today. At first blush I have to say that this device will change the way the world uses the web. Can't believe it doesn't have a gps chip though!

I typed this entry on the iPad. The onscreen keyboard actually works sort of like a real keyboard.

There are some good reasons for omitting flash. For one, almost all flash sites/elements rely on mouse "hover," which is impossible with a touch screen. No flash means far fewer ads. And no flash helps batter life.

It would be nice to have the option, but judging by how infrequently I click to override the flash blockers on my desktop and laptop, no flash isn't all that bad.

As anyone who follows apple, just watch how fast they can drop the price on this thing once all the early adopters have one. I agree blackra1n rocks and much easier for opening up a device. Personally I think the iPad is pretty kick butt after going to an apple store and playing with one for awhile. Would be nice to view the pdf manuals and such I have among other things. JMHO..........

NY Times tech writer David Pogue wrote what I thought was a really well-balanced review of the iPad. He's an Apple fan, to be sure, but I think his perspective is spot-on.
