I've been quoted anywhere from around $1,500 to $450 for insurance on a 2012 250 SLX. The low quote was from NBOA. Anyone have any experience with them? I don't want to pay more than necessary, but I don't want to find myself in a bind if I ever have a claim either.

Was one of your quotes from boatus? I previously insured with Progressive but switched to get better coverage with a lower premium at boatus. TBH, I didn't consider NBOA just because I wasn't aware of them at the time.

I just had a very large claim with BoatUs, and they were absolutely fantastic. Just one call and the adjuster took care of everything. It was the only time I have ever had a claim so I can't comment on other companies claim service, but I can't imagine getting better service than I did from BoatUS! I did lose my no claim discount for 1 year, but if I am claim free this year it will be reinstated. More than fair IMO. End of commercial.

I have found NBOA to be lowest.

So far no claims so cannot speak to that process.

I just renewed with NBOA on my 2012 Chaparral 267 SSX which is almost identical to your 250 SLX in dimensions and list price and was pretty close to that price. With a Sea Ray they offer unlimited towing for the same membership cost compared with Non-Sea Rays like mine which provides a limit of $2,500. They are good people to deal with and I saved a bundle on my old 320 compared with Progressive and Boat U.S.

All insurance quotes are not created equal. The cost of insurance varies by the length of season. If you boat year round, you pay for 12 months of coverage, if you have a six month season you would pay roughly half that as insurance coverage for the off season is basically peanuts. So besides the usual checks on which quotes are agreed value, and which are market value, and the usual levels of liability limits etc. also check to see if you are being quoted for a season that matches your own.

Other item is the amount of over the road towing. If your boat is docked for the season in a marina, it will have a different premium than one that clocks several hundred miles a year on its trailer.

If you haven't told the broker these details up front, they will make assumptions that may not be good for your actual pattern of usage.

As for insurers, we have ACE mainly because they have an excellent reputation in our area.
