I am planning on purchasing a Sundancer 44 - 2005 and would to have an idea of annual insurance costs.. will be kept at Matheson Hammocks. Anybody can help.. any company reccomendations?

Get ready

Insurance is really tough to get from firms that will actually pay claims.

Liability is easily and cheap, perhaps $600 bucks, but if you need Hull insurance ... the cost maybe 5% of the agreed value and you take the first 10-50K deductable for named storms. If yoyu exclude named storms you might get 30% off that pricve, but no marina will accept you so you'll need to buy a house with a dock.

My Yacht insurance has gone from $2800 bucks to $8000 in a year and I'm advsised to expect it to double upon renewal this year.

Thanks Chad. I had estimated 6 grand per year but i believe I have to expect double for coming years.

Chad, one other thing.. can i expect 500 to 600 dollars a month for dockage fees (if i find space) ??

I work for park and recreation for miami-dade county and you will not find a wet slip at matheson hammocks as they are sold out with a waiting list. You may have better luck at Black Point, 500 to 600? When i had a wet slip at black point for my 240 dancer, I paid 450 a month and thats without any employee discount. I think you are looking at higher than 600.

Holy cow. these prices are insane. It's the one time i'm happy about the prices in NYC.

Marina Cost. etc

Figue 15 a foot a month, plus electric., but water included.

Some people have luck finding a slip behind a private residence, for these figure $500 a month, but you will not get pool priviledges nor can you overnight on the boat.

Due to the hurricanes insurance costs have soared. Diesel around $2.50 plus tax, Haul outs $12 a foot, bottom scrubbing by diver $2.00 a foot a month.

But we have sunshine the year round and boating is great 340 days a year.

That's only IF you have any funds left for the burgers to put on the grill.....

Man, every time I read you Florida guys talk about insurance and slip fees, just like Turtle, It eases the pain of paying $8K a year for home taxes....which includes a slip behind the house and all the NJ corruption you can handle.. .

For comparison, I pay approximately $1700/year insurance on my 410DA....with Allstate....

Oh, insurance isnt our only problem right now. We also have rising home taxes as well that the state government are trying to fix. Right now in Miami-Dade County, we have the worst rising tax rates that some homeowners are paying $5k and up. It is not pretty right now. Because of our county that our taxes have been cut, there will be severe cuts in services to our county residents as well as many job cuts. My department will be cutting 90 jobs and I dont know if I am part of it. I hope not! :smt021

As others have said, I think cost of insurance is really dependant on if you are in a hurricane prone area. When I first got my 480, the insurance was just under 2K/year. Several hurricanes later (and a direct hit from Isabel), my inusrance has gone to about 5K/year. I also have a 2% deductible so when I had 15K of damage to my platform from a hurricane, I had to pay it all.... and I'm sure I got dinged for calling them even though there was no claim. To keep my rates low, I think I may have even upped the deductible on named storms but I do still have coverage.

Boat insurance for larger boats is there for one reason... if the boat is a total loss or you destroy someone elses property in a significant way. Otherwise, don't call them.

My 2 cents.

We have a 410 DA (2000). Yesterday we got a quote of $2,200.00 for the year beginning Oct 26 2007, which includes coverage for Fla, Keys and the Bahamas. Home base is Baltimore but plan on going to South Fla Nov 5th with a group of boats, staying for six months and return on or about May 1 2008. The carrier is a AA plus carrier. Cov. is substantial. Current carrier, through Boat US, I think Continental, quotes $4,300.00 for the same coverage. Now the question is the costs once down in South Fla., Keys and Bahamas.

Hi Jay, longtime. Insurance is trivial to the trip. Round trip to Hilton Head from Ct. including all fuel stops and winter slip was 14k. not including "visiting" the boat througout the winter. Fla will be abits more. but worth it.

Yup!! Insurance is a rip-off in Florida.. wind insurance (Hurricane & property taxes) are killing all of us.. Anyway, I had State Farm, but changed to Progressive since SF raised 2x my policy... Insurance will vary.. If the boat is in the water it will sky rocket.. If on a trailer and away form the coast, it may be less $$$ ..

Also, what the other gentleman said, their is a longgg wait for Matheson. It could be as long as 3~4 years and get ready to pay$$$$!!!!! The best bet is a private house on a canal.

Good Luck...

It's not a rip off ... with the risk of wind storm damage ultra high, I can understand why the rates are what they are ... who else would otherwise pay for some owners losing three vessels in multiple storms within five years??

Yes, storm loss is a factor

Storm loss is a factor, but I have to say that it seems the unlucky or irresponsible loose a lot and then there are some like me who have never experienced a single notable loss in a hurricane.

I'd like to think my experience is that I actually prepare my boat for a storm. I move her to a very secluded, protected marina up river, tie her off double lined and then pull her off the dock about 8 feet by lines across the canal and led to bow, stern and midship to prevent slamming into dock pilings, I strip off the canvas. Seal the bilges, remove all seating possible and the cover everything in the cockpit in heavy plastic well taped down by duct tape. All antennas are lowered. I have had the boat Shrink Wrapped in the water when time has allowed and you can get one of these guys to get to you pre-storm.

It takes a day to prep the boat and I can't wait until the storm is on me to react. But by being early and consistent in my prep I've not had a penny's loss. Oh, I've had incredible clean up issues from flying debris (leaves) that stain the decks etc ... I take digital pics before the storm hits as evidence to support any claims that I've done everything reasonable to protect the boat and minimize loss.

So my efforts amount to no losses yet my premium soars because of other boaters lack of diligence. Ought not to work that way, but it does.

Alex D..
I invite you to move to S. florida and share the cost of insurance with us, Home, car(s) & boat. After a few years, u will see what we are talking about.. :smt089

Any how... we all need insurance and that's the price we pay to live here.

I know exactly what you are talking about and there is a good reason it is the way it is. Ten horses could not drag me to live in FL. If you live in a wind storm prone area with the damages we have seen in the last few years, you have to expect to pay what insurers ask. If you would have to carry the true risk, nobody except the super rich would be boating down there ... truth is that the entire community of insured is still carrying an "FL burden" on thier policies.

280DA dockage=$550 x month annual contract(and thats cheap),
Insurance on my 280 $2,500(for now),when I originally purchased it I was getting quotes all over for apx $7-$8k ,

Insurance on house $3,000 (after being quoted around $5k),
