Prosideus, suggested we start a thread on Insurance Claims for damage from Sandy!! Well I put a claim in to start the ball rolling, I was told I would get a cal between 24 and 48hrs from an A.C.E. Adjuster!! I have one Photo of the Boat off the Chocks through a fence 'cause the Marina is limiting access!

I am waiting for a surveyor from the insurance company.
Will let you guys know when anything happens and how it gos.

If anyone been through this procedure please chime in.

If anyone has been through this... we would ask if you could "Walk us Through" the proper steps and ways to do this!!
Thanks, Marshall

Hello guys,,I have Ace also,,just got the claim started,,problem is you cant get to my boat safely and for now I can only see above rub rail,,have no idea of extent of damage under,,boat was dragged about 200 feet and plug was out so Im sure sea water goy into engine comp. How much damage before the Inc will declare a total loss? would love to hear from anyone who has been through this,,

Hi, Thanks to "Sandy" here is NY my house and My Boat compartement is full of water, Pumped the water out of the Boat and had a freind pull the boat out and got it onto my Trailer. Called the insurance company and got my clain number now its geting cold out. Can some one tell me what the process of a typical insurance claim, I have Alllstate.
I assume I am going to need a motor or this one rebuilt. The water was to the top of the engine, did not get into the cabin. I guess the rear line too tight and water came in the back door, The noise was up, No reall Fiberglass damage, But Lucky it did not sink. I guess the Batery Charger is toast also. Funny it realy doesn't look all that bad compared to my house.
Will the Insurance pay for a new engine? Re-manufacture? Pro-rated? The boat is a 98 DA 5.7.

Based on the dealings twice with my insurance company the following happens:
You call them they give you a claim number.
Adjuster looks at boat and you go over what you wnat them to cover.
You get boat fixed and you pay for it and send the receipts to the adjuster.
Adjuster sends the receipts to the insurance company. Insurance company pays what they feel is covered by them.
Definatly not like auto insurance where it gets fixed and the bill goes to insurance company.
That is the way it has worked twice for me in Canada.

I've been through the insurance claim thing one time, and that was when my boat was hit but the drunk boater. I had to fight Allstate (the drunk's insurance company) tooth and nail to get things settled. Here are a few tips I learned along the way....

-do not hire an attorney yet. Talk to one, but don't hire/retain him. If you do, and let the insurance company know this they will no longer talk with you, they'll deal with him.
-have the damage to your boat estimated by a marine surveyor. Allstate sent out a car claims guy to go over my boat and he came up with a cost to repair of $10K. He admitted my boat was the first one he'd ever been on!!!! I insisted they get a marine surveyor and his estimate was over $150,000.
-your best friend may be your state insurance commissioner if you feel you're getting screwed by your insurance company. Commissioners have LOTS of power when it comes to negotiations.
-If your boat is totaled and you've only owned it a short time (a year or two) you're going to have to start over again finding a similar boat. I was reimbursed for the travel costs, registration costs, documentation fees, survey costs, etc, that I incurred when I bought the boat he totaled. Since your boat was totaled by a storm, not a drunk, you may not fare as well with that one.
-If you have a "stated value" policy on your boat that's all you're going to collect for the boat. But don't forget all the other stuff you had on board...clothing, cooking stuff, food in the fridge, dishes, bedding, art work, decorations, etc that you added that are above and beyond the cost of the boat.
-If you don't have a stated value policy you're only going to get now NADA (or BUC Value) for your boat if its totaled, but don't forget the other stuff I mentioned above.
-On my policy, if my boat gets totaled I get my insurance premiums refunded to me. Don't forget to ask about that.
-Read your policy to see what you're eligible to collect on
-Ask about additional costs to have it hauled out, inspected, etc....are they covered???

If I think of more I'll post them. Good luck. Don't be in a rush to accept a payment from the insurance company if you don't feel you're being treated fairly.

Thanks Gofirstclassfor the info,,this dosent sound like it is going to be a pleasant experiance,,,as of yet I have not heard from the claims guy,,they gave me a number which I will try tomorrow,,Im sure the guy is swampd. My dock buddy spoke to his Inc (not sure who) and they are thinking of sending his 330 to another state to complete all the needed work and return it by next season ready to go,,sounds good if they cover anything they missed when you get it back and your mech. can do the work here,,have to wait and see what happens next...

Take lots of picture and detail all things that happened to your boat.
You probably have a survey that was required to get insurance. What is now and then will be the base for your claim.
Do not forget about polution. Your fuel may be wet if it is it costs lots to get rid of it.
When you look at your boat for damage open things up to see behind things.
Appliances and electronics may seem OK but get them checked out.

You shouldnt have to lay out the $$$, albeit may make the repairs slower....

Don't think the Boat is Total, And I have no money to lay out. Not Good

You don't have to pay up front. The insurance company will send you a check and then you pay for repairs. Do nothing until you settle on the total amount with the insurance company. Most good marine service guys understand how this works and will work with you.

I have never delt with marine ins before. I had my drain plug out and drive off. My boat stayed on the stands but bilge filled up to just about the top of the manifolds. problem is my bilge is spotless. No sludge or residue of any kind. How do I prove this to them and what should I have them or try to have them replace. I pulled some oil out and no sighns of water. Pulled plugs and again no water. All of my electrical and pullys were undrr water.? Nothing in cabin

Cxld due to a little snow! Wimp! Hopeful we can meet soon.
I still need a crane to get it off a rock wall!

The insurance companies are going to take a big hit on the east coast. Would not surprise me to see companies fold or not offer insurance in that part of the country and drive the price up. I heard a homeowner say the insurance company told them to take a hike becuase the home was flooded and you can only get foold insuranse through the feds. hey "O" I need your help.....

Spoke to the"Adjuster" last week!! I think he does Houses, I said I wanted a Marine Surveyor to look at my Boat... he said okay and that's the Last that I've heard from anyone!! The Boat was Craned and re-blocked so unless we have another, 1) Tornado, 2) Hurricane or 3) 13''s of Snow.... we should be alright!!

Last year I lost my boat in the fire in Port Lambton Ontario as. Well as 74 other boats were lost, I did OK but could have done better if I was more prepared. The insurance companies are ruthless and so our the layers. Best of luck to everyone in this stressful situation, I placed my boat up for sale last month and we here in Sarnia got hit pretty hard also but not to the same extent, it sure was nerve racking and many trips were made to the marina to keep the boat secure and undamaged. The marina had all new gazebos on one side and all were destroyed as well as other damage, I had a tree down in the front yard and the back and tonight was rebuilding my fence. My wife had to work OT for the hydro company to man the phones and one of her fellow employees was killed in the morning on the hydro lines.... sandy has been a *****

Ok, don't let fat people sit on your platform.
It only took a 40 ft Tiara to break mine.

Just got a quote back from "swim platforms.com" and a simple 5k will replace it.
This boating thing is worth it.....right?
