from Kiplinger’s March 2010 newsletter: “Congress may be stalled on funding federal highways and bridges … but lawmakers will commit to improving inland waterways. By year-end, look for a jump of up to 9¢ in the current 20¢-per-gallon tax on boat and barge fuel. That’ll buoy the trust fund used to build and renovate the country’s locks and dams and to improve navigation through dredging, etc. River freight firms back the move. Legislation raising the fuel tax will be tied to a 20-year plan setting priorities, basing funding on projects’ significance to inland commerce. At present, it’s first come, first served. Specific projects likely to get a leg up: Renovation of the Olmsted locks on the Ohio River, five new locks on the Upper Mississippi and two on the Illinois.”

I suppose that they thought long and hard (not) about increasing the costs associated with a (another) dying industry. This will help keep more boat companies from closing.

Typical liberal government mistake. Isn't the definition of insanity doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results?

Just sink my boat, shoot me, and stick a fork in me. I'm done.

Wonder If this is a federal type tax that will apply to all states? If so then thank you so much "big brother". Heaven forbid a government entity actually cut something out of the budget, all they have to do is raise taxes !! Land of the free.

Well, those of us with Gas engines are already paying the federal and state highway use taxes. Why don't they take that money for the new water tax?

They are going to find all kinds of new ways to tax us now. Just wait.

In case you didn't know, a few states have a procedure in place to recoup state highway use taxes from fuel purchased for marine purposes. Unfortunately for me, SC is not one of those states. NC is though.

I buy my gas from the Oneida Indian's marina no gas tax its next door to my marina. :smt001
Screw NY and their gas taxes. :smt021

Whereas most all land gas now contains between 1%-10% ethanol, often marine gas is either pure gasoline or has additives to help slow the seperation of the ethanol from the gas. There are other threads that go more in detail on this. At my marina, the gas is 100% gas- no ethanol.

Here is why I ask I dont have a big boat so i was thinking I could just load 10-20 gallons on the way to where the boat is docked and fill it up is that not an option

If you use enough gas in a boat, I thing 200 gallons, you can apply and get the tax money back. Here in CT one year, I did enough that I got both the state and fed tax back. That tax was not designed for pleasure boats.

Look at this way guys, you would be contibuting to my good boating since I am on the Illinois Waterway which is maintained and operated by the Army Corp of Engineers. It would be one of those almost non-existent circumstances where I would actually get some government largess. Almost makes me feel like a Democrat.:smt043

Make sure this is allowed at your marina.

Many do not allow this due to safety and worries of spillage.
