I'm having periodic problems with starting my boat. The local dealer/mechanic will screw me so I'm looking for help before I go in.

My boat is 2005 175 Sport I/O 135 Alpha 1

Sometimes when I turn the key to start the engine it turns over just fine.

Other times when I turn the key to start the engine does nothing. It doesn't even try to turn over. All I hear is the key switch alarm and a clicking sound. The clicking seems to be coming from the engine but recently it almost sounded like it was coming from the throttle gear box.

Things I have done to try and fix the issue:

1) checked all the engine fluids
2) Changed the fuel
3) Checked all teh fuses
4) Changed the starter
5) Changed the key switch
6) Checked the engine kill switch each time.

I have put some $$$$ into this and it still is not working all the time. Can I please get some help.

Thank you:smt021

If you believe in the theory of "Occam's Razor", (Of several acceptable explanations for a phenomenon, the simplest is preferable, provided that it does not contradict the observed facts), then I would suspect that it's the battery.

I'd check out the battery, first, as well. Pull off all connections on both the battery and the engine side - grounds and positives. Inspect them - look to see that the wires look good - corrosion can work it's way up under the casing. Do your best to verify this hasn't happened. Next, clean contacts/connections and re-attach all cables. Sounds like there just isn't enough juice being transmitted. Could also be as simple as loose connections.

Ditto, but not on a boat for me. Was driven crazy by a tractor that was inconsistent. Took the battery out, cleaned all of the connections, reattached, worked perfectly since.
