Incoming Classic - 1980 SRV 245

Great looking boat for it's age - Someone obvously took good care of the ol' girl.

Enjoy it.

My next, and most important question is, anyone know where you can get them round plastic toggle switch labels?

There is one place that will make them for you. I asked for a quote when I got my 245. They quoted me $115.00. I didn't have them made, as we had other, more important things we wanted to buy first, i.e., the Admiral's nautical themed dishes and my TV

Check out Bernard Engraving - bereng.com They have 1 pic on their website that shows the round identi-plates. I just attached that pic to an email with a list of what I wanted, and they got back to me in two days. I will get them though, since I re-gauged the helm, etc. This will be a nice addition.

001.JPGLooks great! I have the sister boat I just finished

Really nice!

When you take the camper top down, where do the rear bows fold to?

very nice boat, very similar to my 1980 245 DA. I just bought it 3 weeks ago, went fishing and have been working on it since. the boat was bought for next season so I am just getting a head start on the work. I am thoroughly impressed at how well these old boat handle rough waters. i am on the inner bay of lake erie and when I hit the open it can get rough but this old girl just cruises through it smoothly.

I have been looking for another like mine and was wondering if you could help me out? I have the Merc. 260 w/alpha one drive and the prop seems to be way over pitched. It is currently running a 15.5D x 23P and although it does get on plane with full tabs max speed was 27mph @ 3400. Just wondering what size prop you are running and what your WOT is.

I am now in love with your boat vs. mine as I have the forward facing windshield and yours looks nicer, everything else looks identical, wonder if I can change mine since I need to replace all the side shields anyways lol.

The only time I have taken down all the canvas was when it was shipped, and we just left them up. Usually it can be covered with part of the canvas and just stays up there.

I am not sure of the specs on the prop exactly but I will check the spare next time I am at the boat. That being said, my numbers are about the same as yours RPM/MPH wise. With a full tank of fuel and 4-5 people it has to be pushing 6000 pounds.

Speaking of windshields, is it still possible to get the weatherstripping or can you use generic stuff? One of the PO's just used some sort of black silicone to fix the starboard side windshield. It would be nice to do it properly.

Dogdave, do you have any other pics of your boat and the work you did?

Any chance your boat has the original teak finish? Wondering if it is a light colored finish or the darker red finish and if it is an oil or varnish finish. I am redoing all my teak and want it original color and finish if I can. I have got some awesome advise how to redo the teak now just need to figure out the coloring. I have a thread under fiberglass/wood if you care to read on how to redo the teak and even pictures of how awesome it looks.

Thanks :)

Congratulations on your purchase, John. Looks like you found a classic that's been well cared for. Curious to know the condition of your cabin and upholstery - planning to update it at all? I will be installing a new Bimini top - not sure on upholstery yet.

I'm new to boating myself, and we've had a great time this summer on our Sundancer - not exactly the same as your boat, but very similar.

As far as some of the other items that have been mentioned on this thread:
Cruising speed for my boat is about 25mph at 3400 RPM, and WOT is about 4400 RPM.
I freshened up my teak w 100 grit sandpaper and Watco teak oil - worked out pretty well.
I should know the pitch of my prop, but I don't. I'll have to check on that - I know I'm able to get on plane rather easily.
My helm could use some updating too - thanks for the tip, Rick. I'll check out that site.

I do have a bunch of pics. I am working on shrinking them to fit on this site. On the prop question I have a Stainless 19P prop I run 25 mph at 3100 RPM at cruise. I have not run it wide open yet as the water has been rough when we have been out. My uncle who gave me the boat and built the engine said 35- 40 mph at 5000.

19P is what I figure I should be using, mine came with a 23P and it has to use full tabs and is slow to plane with wot @3400 rpm.

Be switching to new prop in the spring.

I would love to see some pictures, my boat has all the wood removed now and is covered for the winter already. I am also from Ontario (on inner bay of Lake Erie, Turkey Point) would be nice to meet someone from here & see another boat like mine. Next year we are planing a week long cruise. I want to take the family to Putin Bay but have to figure out how far I can go on a full tank and everything first.

Hope your boating is going good season is closing fast down here.

Steve

Forgot to say if you want any details or pictures, measurements, let me know before October 10 :)

Thanks man... I am interested in your back bench seat. Is it "factory", or does it appear modified by a previous owner? It's apparent that I'm NEVER going to get rid of that thing, so I may as well make it as comfortable as possible. Possible to tell me how deep the seat is, from front to back? All the wood is original, and starting to come apart. So, yet another project added to the off-season!

I have some pics of my helm after I re-gauged it. I need to get a photo bucket account set up and get some pics up there. I basically installed new gauges, masked them off, masked/papered off the whole area, and spray painted the plywood helm. A quicky job to say the least, but 10000% better. And it really dresses up the helm. I was REALLY lucky as all the wiring was "factory", meaning I didn't have to mess with someone else's idea of wiring. Ya know, let's use 50 feet of wire when we only need 3 inches...

As far as props, I'm using a 16x16, get about 28-34 depending on load. Boat comes down on plane very nicely and quickly. No need for tabs. Factory prop I believe is 14.75x15. That's my spare, and I used it this season. Took 5 miles, 50 gallons of gas, and full tabs to plane. Thank GOD it was on there only a week. And thank GOD I busted it up and will never have to use it again!

I am sure the back bench is factory my boat has the exact same bench with the removable L shaped backrest. Is very comfy & was actually the reason why we boat the boat.

I will be definatley be selling my prop and getting something different lol. I know what you mean 5 miles & 50 gallons of gas. I actually stopped the boat to see if I had weeds on my prop or something, cold not believe how line it took to plane lol.

If that bench was out, say another 3"-4", then at least there'd be a bit of an angle, and you could kick back a lot easier. But it's right at a 90 degree angle and very uncomfortable. I will come up with something, because that's the ONLY thing I hate about the boat...

There's a lot of guys on here that know way more about props than I do, but I say try the 16x16. We have swift current sometimes up here on the Niagara River, and that prop bites nicely, especially when there's a lot of chop. And it holds the boat nicely on sharper turns. Also makes maneuvering a lot easier when docking. It give that little bit of extra "thrust" at lower rpms.

Sound like the perfect prop for me.

As for the bench I wish my boat was not covered for winter already. The PO added 2-1/2" wedge on mine. It is fastened on the base of the bench and goes right to 0 on the back. The angle is not much but I can tell it is there and me being 6`4" I could really use another 2 inches of lift. It still sits on the back support but he didn't adjust the front pin locks so that is how I knew he raised it. I moved the pins and works great.

Thinking of making a fibreglass engine cover. Right now it has carpets plywood, think fibreglass wool look better though. Would there be a problem in anyway if I did this?

I need to make a new hatch too. That project was at the top of my list last/this season, but got pushed back due to the time necessary to make it. Time spent on building hatches, is time NOT spent in the water .

I assume that you can use fiberglass mat, epoxied over plywood, etc. I can't remember who, but there's a guy on here that made a swim platform, that is absolutely ridiculous gorgeous. Has non-skid on there and everything. If you search around for "swim platforms", you'll find it. His thread explains how he built everything, has pics, etc. Point is, is that you can do the same with an engine hatch. We carpet our back deck, so I think that this is the way I'll go on this. In any event, I have a LOT of brightwork to do, and have to rebuild a few things as well.

Wait till the admiral finds out I'm turning the basement into a wood shop for the winter...
