Hi,
Today I had a computer diagnostic test done on my two engines. All good for a few minor sensor readings and strange reading in the Starboard RPM history. The history stated that my engine has been running at over 5200 RPM for more than 72 hours. Now I am not sure if it was 72 hours or 72 times, but either way that is not possible. I even had the so called "mechanic" tell me that I abuse my engine. For a moment I found myself trying to prove, to the so called expert, that those numbers could not be possible. "How can one engine have those numbers and not the other" or "...there is no way an engine which WOT is 4800 can run at 5200 plus for that long without exploding". It seemed like he didn't believe me even though one of the records was right at the final hour. This would indicate it happened during the diagnostic test while we where docked. Since I have owned the boat I have seen my revs go up one time due to an emergency reaction. Yes, on that occasion, I set to neutral under power at around 3400 RPM to avoid a rope laid across my path on the water. Engines shut off and this event is recorded on the Port engines computer. I have had many hours of running after this isolated incident.
Nonetheless, the only behavior that I think could set these readings is my hard starting problem. When my engine is hot I sometimes have to bleep the throttle for it to start. As soon as the engine fires I let off and never have the RPM go over 1500 max. Could this be the reason for the high number of RPM readings. It does not make sense to me, but maybe there is a TPS that records possible RPM at that position.
I am in the process of selling the boat and I need a reasonable explanation for these recorded numbers.
