It was represented by a major broker that my intended purchase (an '84 260 EC) was a 4.5 on a 5.0 scale "without a ding, dent or scratch". Except for a few minor rubs on the cushions it was in "showroom condition", with the stern drive "replaced in 2013"
Survey:
1)several dozen minor things, lights, blower, etc, etc, etc
2)deep gouge going through the gelcoat into the laminate
3)excessive moisture with 18% in the transom
4)the stern drive was actually replaced four years ago and is an after market drive. Surveyor couldn't read the serial numbers on either the drive or the assembly(?)
5) rotting wood
6) A/C, hot water heater, stove/oven were missing

A WELL SPENT $500

Still looking

Now you know why most people ALWAYS recommend you ALWAYS get a survey. And why most people think the term "boat broker" has the same meaning as "lies through is teeth."

We traveled 6 hours to see a Marine Max 270DA in..."mint condition". Same deal, but with a massively corroded BIII, that the broker insisted was "just cosmetic." Then, we found a small hole in hull and a severely cracked swim platform...again, broker stated "just cosmetic." Dude was a total ignorant snake. Unfortunately for him, my wife and I knew to demand a hull-out and called his BS. Totally soured us on Brokers. We ended up buying privately, and it was a pleasure.

I purchased a boat this past spring after failing two during survey. My broker is super honest and worked hard for me. He would get the truth before we made the travel to see boats. I ended up viewing 9 boats. The third one on survey was a for sale by owner. I still used my broker to protect my and the sellers interest. I got a great deal and everyone was super pleased. Not all are bad as he also sold my previous boat and was honest the way through to the buyer. Just takes honest people sometimes. If you ever need a broker please contact me and I will refer.

Never say never...

Never say always...

There will be good and bad out there. Some brokers will save you much heartache and some will cause it. You must be diligent and find the right combination of vessel and situation.
