I enjoy working on my boat and follow the service manual for guidance. Recently replaced the impeller on my 2001 260DA with a 5.7. The service manual said to torque the impeller housing to 30 ft lb. I was skeptical but followed the guide. Well a bolt housing has cracked. Could the service manual be wrong? What are your experiences here.

Those torque settings are for the engine side of things. That's the cast iron engine's water pump you're reading. Without doing a lot of digging for actual torque settings, that should be down somewhere in the inch-pound realm.

Is that an OEM kit you used? The impellers are a lot lighter with the chinese junk and won't stand up as well. Reading reviews on amazon, there appears to be a lot of counterfeit kits being sold as Merc. The OE Merc kits (46-807151A14) come with new screws and believe they were torqued to 20 ft/lbs in the last kit I did.

I'd say it's wrong. I just found a post from 2015 addressing this as Mercury printed the wrong information. The correct torque specs are 15-20 foot pounds.
