My water impeller pump broke today:smt013 I heard a little whinning noise then the Port side temp alarm went off.
I shut everything down and opened the hatch, the serpentine belt was broke and the water pump was seized up. Is it normal for this to happen when the impeller goes bad?

Do you know if your impeller was changed since 2003?

Yes, it was changed once. I got the impeller housing off and the impeller fins were all jamped up. Replaced impeller and O-ring and all is well:thumbsup:

I noticed some waring in the housing so it will have to be replace next time.
On to the Starboard side next.
Thanks!

a little tip....when replacing an impeller i always use some dish soap in the housing to lubricate it on the inital start up.Alot of heat can build up before it pulls water through the system and gets wet.It also lets you know without any doubt if its working or not. just look for the bubbles...lol

They are not the easyest to get in, I used some 2-4-C marine lubricant on the Impeller and O-Ring.

i'v found in my boating experiance--not to wait for the pump to go bad before i replace it--i started changing the impeller every 2 yrs.my dad says it's a maintinence thing, kinda like changing oil .
-lady ashley---good call on the soap ! i'v been using wd 40

just my thoughts,steven

My impeller is still working fine but i have had my boat for a little over a year now and i have been wondering about it. i know how important it is and seeing that i only have one engine i don't want to be stranded on the water when it goes bad. how do you check it and i like the idea of replacing it on a regular schedule. could anyone give me a step by step or point to a website where i can learn how to do it. or is this job beyond the weekend mechanic?
thanks
Bry

Also with the lube take a big tie rap,or 2 put the impeller in the right direction and that will help install it.
I used the zip ties and dish soap when repacing the Starboard side impellers, worked like a charm:thumbsup:

Thanks for the tip!:smt001

Better get to that other belt too!
How do you know the pump seized? You really cant spin that thing by hand. Could be your belt broke and the impeller was fine. Any fins missing? Had it "taken shape"?
WD40 is probably fine in small doses, but it theoretically it could start dissolving your impeller.

I knew the pump was seized because I could not turn the fly wheel by hand. Took the pump apart and found four fins broke off the impeller and were all jamed -up, fortunately I was able the retrieve all the pieces. Yes, replaced the belts and keeping old one for spare.
