By accident or design - (likely accidental) the raw water pump in my Kohler 8EOZ genset in my 450DA is set up for easy access for a quick impeller replacement.

While the cover is easily accessed, there's no access to pry it out.

Owned this puller for years:

Jabsco Compact Impeller Removal Tool up to 2-1/4" (anythingboating.com)

It worked well on my 6 cylinder YANMAR diesels, and can handle the gen set impeller while on the bench, its just too big for the genset impeller on the boat.

Can someone please share their experience with small impeller pullers?

Here in SW Florida that genny is typically running when the engines are running and if we do anchor out, it's on double duty.

I do carry a spare pump on board, however it would be much easier/quicker to swap the impeller compared to removing the sound enclosure for a pump replacement.

BEST !

Vice grips if ornery :)

The small needle nose vice grips work really well.

But getting the impeller back in is usually the tougher part. I usually remove the whole pump and inspect. Be sure to use Teflon, or lithium (will wash away quickly) in a pinch, grease to reassemble.
