2000 340 7.4 V drives. Not much room to get around back there. Any tricks to make the job go smoother, less busted knuckles and bruised body parts? Have complete kits as well as thermostats (closed cooling). All suggestions appreciated!

Boat yoga! We have the ability to repair and replace parts we can't see until they are totally removed from the engine!!

List of "tricks":
1. Bring down some foam padding to sit/kneel on while working.
2. Bring down all tools to be used to avoid constant climb in and out of bilge.
3. Research ratchet sizes for impeller cover and bolts that hold on water tube in advance.
4. Bring down impeller puller, replacement impeller, O ring and dishwashing soap and several zip ties to squeeze new impeller to smaller diameter for insertion.
5. Bring down a small block of wood and hammer to "tap" new impeller into place.
6. Bring down a hanging bright light source.

I had a '99 340 and spent about an hour trying to figure out how to get to the pumps without 1.) breaking my body and/or 2.) getting stuck behind the engines requiring three dock neighbors help to get out (after they take copious photos of me being stuck back there).

Then I paid to have it done.

I applaud you guys for DIY'ing these things. I can't think of a more horribly located "service item" on any of the boats I've owned...

I had a 92 330 with same motors carbed. Best advice was to remove the whole pump, pulley, fuel pump Assembly. It was only a few bolts and removal of hoses but then I could work up top to assemble then reinstall. It’s so blind it would
Be hard to do it any other way

We have spare pump and remove old and then put in replacement. Put new impeller in on table and store for next time. One of our engines the pump is beside the fuel tank and under the engine. The hoses are the difficult part of replacement. If your hose have slack connect them to the pump before you place the pump.
