impeller and housing after 4 hours

All you guys whining about Mobile Mechanics from craigslist....funny...Seems to me the only time you go on craigslist is to get a deal on something...Sounds like you are to cheap to get a a dealer to do the work...and why aren't you asking for their credentials? Insurance? Bonded? Merc/volvo tech certified?

Being that I work on other peoples boats via mobile, I've noticed that the people I deal with that do find me through craigslist advertising (Which I do not have to do a lot, mostly word of mouth), are some of the cheapest, @$$holes in the boating industry...They also don't seem to have the money to fix their boats right to begin with, and don't seem to have the money to be able to afford to boat either.

In the end, you get what you pay for.

And ofttimes not. I was fueling my car and saw a very nice truck with a very professional looking sign on the back window "(NAME's) Mobile Marine Service". I waited outside the station convenience store to chat and get a business card. Nice fellow. nice business appearance. Long story short.....He worked at the local Toyota dealer; had 8 years experience and was ASE certified.

I took his card, exchanged pleasantries, shook hands and left. The card went from my hand immediately to the passenger side floor of my SUV.

Caveat Emptor.

I'd love to find a trustworthy mechanic who g.a.s. about his/her work quality/ethic and customer service.

Let's see, first off I never negotiate price, their price is their price. My father had me working on our family car since 7th grade. I worked on F-15's for 10 years . part of that as an advisor to Saudi Arabia. I have worked on computers since 1980. So I am fully capable to work on my boat. It's just that I work 10 hours a day and would rather enjoy the boat on weekends instead of working on it. The first mech. Was well cedentialed , young man with family . paid 400 to check out everything and let me know what needed to be done. Only thing needed was oil change and impellers , get home first crank no water . hoses hooked up backwards . I screwed up and forgot about leaving fresh water hose connected too long before cranking and messed up a motor, he subsequently ordered the wrong motor, i lost use of the boat for about 3 months. After all that every time I took the boat out I had a hose blow , had two more blow that he said was good. I ended up replacing the rest of them myself, everyone was just about to blow. Next three mech. No showed . The last one charged me 585/ to change one impeller kit clean up carbs and replace 2 thermostats. The kit is the one I have at the beginning of this thread I found that the port motor doesn't even have a stat in it, that he cheated me for and he put 163 degree stat in the starboard.
So yes in my experience EVERYONE I have dealt with absolutely suck.

There are mechanics and there are part changers. Good mechanic will troubleshoot then diagnose a repair. Make repair, double check all work, then test run.

part changers will swap out parts all day till they get lucky, and most cant even get the reinstall of part correct.

GOOD LUCK PEOPLE

My #1 guy ran the service dept at the local SR dealer before going on his own. He or his employees have been the only people in my ER ever. He is meticulous, honest and experienced. He has mentioned how much he appreciates a gas 400DA ER - it's about best-case scenario. I don't need him often, but he can work on my boat in the middle of a Michigan winter while it's in a clean heated boathouse. I also pay him before he gets home that day. Apparently business is TOO good. When I called him and told him about an electrical bug that has me stumped, he gave me an apt, and then stood me up. My calls and texts go unanswered. I've been fired as a customer.

Guy #2 is his competition. He has worked for friends of mine and they raved about his integrity and quality of work. He told me that he was looking forward to working to working on my boat in the boathouse on a rainy day. Rainy days came and went for 5 weeks. Never saw him, never got a returned call.

I finally found a pool company to talk to me. I made an apt. for Thursday afternoon. I left work early. They never showed.

It's temping to go online and slam these people, but when the market changes and they're willing to show up, I might need them to. At this point I'm not expecting to stumble across both competence AND availability. I guess it's one or the other. :smt013

Getting back to the subject of impeller changes and lack of water flow......that O ring MUST seat properly in the housing otherwise you can say goodbye to your brand new impeller and the work it took to install it! I accidentally pinched mine when I replaced the housing cover and no water flow tore up the new impeller.

Thanks to everyone for your input. Sorry to say I'm Glad I'm not the only one in this boat :smt100.

Must be why this is my go to site for information and know how. I ASSume if there were an abundance great mech's. out there no one would be posting anything cause we all wouldn't know anything.

Thanks again,
