Northern IL.
Boat Info
2000 400 Sedan Bridge with twin CAT 3116's

2000 340 Sundancer - SOLD!
210 Monaco 1987 - SOLD!
Engines
Twin Caterpillar 3116's 350 HP straight drives
Since my Monaco was purchased locally I have no clue of taxes due on out of state purchase. Can anyone confirm what taxes / fees will be due if I purchase a boat outside of IL and have it shipped here?

Does it matter if it is a brokerage deal? Does that count a private party or purchasing thru a dealer?

What about if it is documented?

Thanks!

In WI you do it when doing the registration and title. You list your purchase price and calculate the tax based on what you write in and add it to the registration fee and than write the check to the state. Just like titling when you buy a car from private owner.

Or you could try this http://bit.ly/10y49cU.

Pretty much the same process for IL. Still have to pay if purchased from private party.

Also if you have an unreasonable value as the sale value - they use book value. I bought my boat and had in MO for 5 years and moved it to Illinois, so I just had to show proof of registration and taxes were paid in MO. It is hard to get straight answers. I recommend emailing or contacting their DNR or whatever it is. They were helpful when I started getting the run around.

Have your broker prepare a bill of sale that you can then present to the DNR to register the boat in IL. I suggest you call the IL DNR directly to find out what form(s) are required to pay the sales tax and to whom you have to make the check out to (probably the Dept of Revenue). The few times I called the DNR directly they were surprisingly helpful and courteous.

It doesn't matter where you purchase the boat from or who, it matters where you will register it. You pay sales tax when and where you register the boat. Some dealers will collect sales tax or apply the amount collected towards the tax if less than the state purchased.

The form you're looking for is an RUT-50.

My broker was awesome, not sure what he did, but I paid no sales tax and have new registration and title in my name. Saved me a couple grand.
