I have a mercruiser 260 hp and am having problems with the idle. It will idle fine cold and pulling it off the trailer. getting it threw the marina it has a little hisitation but not much, almost like a miss. It smells a little rich. It planes out fine ran all over the lake at high rpm but as soon as I come back to idle it dies. It will start but dies before I can get it in gear. If I'm fast enough to get it into gear and with some gas it will run fine again at the higher rpm range. I'm the worst when it comes to carbs so any advise would be great.

Hi,

It sounds like you may have some either sucked some dirt into the idle circuit or you need a tune up?
You could start by winding your idle up a bit...Thats the screw with a spring on it below the throttle cable attach point. Once the engine is warm it should run around 600-650 in the water.

Manual choke or electric? Check to make sure the choke plate is opening up when warm. Smelling rich makes me think your choke plate isn't opening far enough warmed up.
