The "THT bashing Sea Ray" thread got me thinking...............I read that whole thread on THT and in addition I visit other boating forums quite often. It seems like the only boaters who aren't idiots, jerks, drunks or morons are on boating forums. I see comments like...."I don't go out on holiday because of all the drunks", "I don't use the boat ramp on weekends because of all the idiots", etc. What gives, I take one if not both of my boats out every weekend and the area I boat in is filled with all different types of boats and I'm not seeing all the idiots, jerks, drunks or morons..............maybe I need glasses.........LOL. Just wondering what your thoughts are on this.

John

I thought the same as you, but just assume that owning a boat that is not a high end CC simply made me one of the boaters others scoff at. I enjoy weekend trips, and can't say I see much if any terrible boaters out there.

Statistically 1 out of every 4 boaters is an idiots, jerk, drunk or moron. So look around. If the three guys next to you seem fine then...........

Just remember when your reading any boat forum........ There's two types of boaters: Boaters who own A Sea Ray and Boaters who want to own a Sea Ray -That being said.. usually the non Sea Ray owner is doing the bashing to justify there purchase

I've had to deal with some drunk fisherman at State Parks but none at our boat club. BUI is enforced here. Idiots are everywhere and some are good boaters, Mike.

We see them all the time. People not slowing for wake zones, drinking while boating alot. I have no problem if you are anchored (staying the night) and a couple of drinks is ok if you are responsible (know the limits) but this is not the case many times. Memorial Day, 4th of July and labor day we don't spend on the water. Too many idiots out there and very few even know the rules of the road.

...and hear I thought this thread was going to be about ravens fans John...

we were tied up with 3-4 other boats last weekend in a cove with probably 5 or 6 other groups of big boats. Then here comes a Sea Ray runabout pulling a skiier within a 100' or so of our anchorage. I hop on the jet ski and chase the guy down and calmly asked him if he has the spare change it'll take to haul out and block up a 50' boat or two, repair the fiberglass and reset a few cleats. The guy apologized, I told him he had a cool boat and he went and played in the next cove over the rest of the day. 2-3 hours later, Sea Ray #2, this time a wakeboard boat comes thru with a wake surfer...i swear it was putting out a 5-6 ft wake as he plowed along at 10-11 mph it seemed. About 5 guys on 2 RIBs chased him down in about 8 seconds but it was obvious from a distance this conversation wasn't as pleasant as mine was. We don't experience these braincramps very often at all as it seems most non-canboaters and non-Gibson houseboaters 'get it' in our area but they are definitely out there. and some of these nuts even run sea rays believe it or not **gasp**

I also think it is a situation of volume, or frequency. Our house and mooring are about 200 yards down river from the local public landing. As a result we regularly see and hear the traffic coming and going from the landing. It is astonishing the number of people who are drinking beer at 9:00 am on a Saturday morning as they are heading down river for a day at the beach. Then later in the day when they come back we usually see one or two boats being towed back in usually having been piloted earlier in the day by early beer drinkers.

But once we get down river and into the bay the population of idiots seems to drop off dramatically.

Henry

P.S. Most often those beer drinkers tend to be guys in center console fishing boats........

We have a bridge that crosses Okanagan Lake...that's where you see the idiots. It doesn't stop me from going out, just amazes me lack of knowledge. A Dad going full tilt through the bridge opening, which is posted 5 mph, towing his kids on a biscuit with 10 other boats going one way or the other...dumb.

John,
No one is getting drunk over where you are because they don’t want to get sick and throw up on those pretty white yacht club uniforms.

I am pretty sure that *ssholes are born not made. Sometimes you just can't fix stupid. And they can buy whatever boat they want!

LMAO.......well played Dad.......don't know how to classify hack4alivin's comment, to early in the day for him to be drunk, that leaves idiot, jerk or moron........hmm..........Bill, you doing any boating this weekend?

John

John,

We just returned from Haven Harbor and Cambridge last weekend, nice week away. Already promised the kids we would stay close to home with the boat and use it for home base for the Jet Skis this weekend. We should plan something soon, season is going by way too fast.

PS: If I come over that way do I have to wear the whites?

No shortage of them around here. Especially on weekends and holidays. Not bad during those times if you go out before they do or after they are done for the day.
My guess about why you don't see them on boating forums is: they probaly don't have enough interest in learning more about the hobby boater safety, so why would they want to spend time on a forum?

Ok John back on topic here. So we spend both Saturday and Sunday as cruise out to Maxwell Point and go swimming days, you know the area well. Now in the two days going out I saw 3 different very stupid and general non-sense moves by what I would call idiots, morons, or maybe at the time, drunk boaters. Now I guess it would all depend on now you want to rate it.

A: 3 on 2 different days, that would be 150 percent, pretty bad.

B: 3 out of maybe 100 or more boats in the area over the weekend. Well that drops it to 3 percent, much more acceptable.

Or there is:

Option C: considering the fact that I am used to seeing this kind of stuff all during the months of June, July and August I have grown immune to it and just slow down, give them awide berth, and let nature run its course.

I see the same idiots on our lake. The problem as I see it; it brings more law enforcement scrutiny on those of us who have some common sense.

Sunday afternoon I was waxing the deck of the boat which is a stones throw from the gas dock. A narrow channel runs in front of the gas dock with numerous no wake signs. I saw one guy kicking up a wake which really rocked the boats getting fuel, he got yelled at by the fuel dock attendent. Another guy was putting thru the same area and a couple kids had thier feet dangling off the bow..........are they idiots, maybe. But I think alot of people on these forums are too quick call someone out, maybe they are just new to boating, doesn't mean they are an idiot, jerk, drunk or a moron.......just my .02

I agree John, maybe just a lot of “new boaters” that don’t know any better. But that being the case, if you are getting behind the helm of something as big as a boat should you not make it your business to get the right education or information so you do know better. Even a new boater should be at the very least able to read. Ignoring the “No Wake Zone” or speed limit signs, well that might move you into the “Idiot” or “Jerk” classification.

hack,

Can't hook up with you on Sept. 16th, going to the Ravens / Eagles game in Philly........want to see for myself if there are really idiots, jerks, drunks and morons at Eagles games like everybody claims.......has was that for staying on topic.

John
