Hey Folks....

I live on the West Coast of Canada and was doing some usual pre season work.

About 3 years ago when I got my boat I ran into an issue with the IAC's and changed them out. The history is not necessarily important but then it might be.... so: The Starboard engine would cut out at idle when warm. Once I changed the IAC it was fine so I changed out the Port engine as well. Now I usually do a throttle assembly cleaning on my boat ever spring to make sure that the intakes and things are clean, clean out the fire arrestor and stuff. With that previous IAC the old one was not giving any computer related warnings which made it a bit of an issue to figure out but when I had it off I looked at it and could see that the 'piston' in the IAC was covered in oily black mess which was restricting its movement. I considered whether or not I could clean it and keep using it but it was not very important as the engines were running fine....

Ok on to my CURRENT ISSUE: When cleaning the Throttle body I decided (I think not correctly) to spray a bit of the stuff into the little intake for the IAC with the intention of cleaning it as well while it was idling. Now the port engine will have trouble running after I "CUT" the engines.... if I throttle back relatively aggressively say from 2000 after I am off the step then it will cut like it is choking. Additionally it will do it from a fast idle of say 1100. If I chop the throttle it will choke a bit but keep running... will come down to say 400 and stuff but it normally sorts itself out.

I have recently also started to use STARTRON in the fuel system but I didnt think that this could be related. This would be the second tank of fuel with STARTRON running in it, additionally this all happened on the day after a refuel. But the PORT engine was fueled second so I would not expect fuel contamination.

Questions:

Did I mess up the IAC with the throttle body cleaner?

In general what is the hourly use per engine that most of you have recognized issues with your IAC's. There was one post 3 years ago where the gentlemen said that he keeps a spare on his boat all the time. When I bought the boat it had 255hrs or so per engine (when they were then changed out) and now I am over 600 so I have doubled the previous hrs-failure.

Guess that is it for now.... thoughts please... THKS

I've used Starton in evey tank of gas that's been run through my boat for the last 2.5 years with zero problems (no water in the fuel filters, gunk, or any ethanol/fuel separation). Same with my father but for longer with his boat (carbeurated). That said, I have had both my IACs fail, but it was completely out of left field for me. Nothing specific I could attribute the failure to. Mine failed within a month of each other, port first then starboard. Dont have the exact hours... but both were the original (matching engine paint) in the range of 180-200hrs on 2005 motors.

Both my IAC's failed within 10 hours of each other, twice. About 160 hours and about 320 hours.....it was so predictable I told my son on a trip to just wait for the alarm and sure enough.....and that's why I carry a spare.

Hey guys,

Thanks for the posts. Good to hear the positive or at least not negative response to the use of Startron. I will keep that on the go for sure based on what I have been reading it could be one of the most inexpensive long term preventative maintenance applications that I have seen in some time.

Anyway, I will use 200hrs roughly as a guide for my IAC's based on responses and will plan to change these out. Guess that is why they are cheap.

Regards

never spray any cleaner on the IAC's there is actually a Merc bulletin out there somewhere that says it's a No No!
