I was having issues with my boat dying at idle or when coming back in to the dock.
It would start fine, run well all day, but after coming off plane and putting the boat at ilde, they would start to sputter then just die. I couldn't get them to restart until after about 20-30 min.
I have been chasing this issue for months!!
Finally a friend recommended it could be the IAC valve.
I went online, found the part # and found TONS on Ebay and other websites. The Mercury part is about $160. The Sierra part is about $90. I found it on amazon and ebay for $39. It describes that it was compatible with part number: 862998. I decided for $80 it was worth a shot, so i ordered two of them.
I noticed that when I went to replace them, the new ones have a spring and pin in them. The original one does not. the new part says: "compatible with ECM555 8.1L V8 Mercruiser Horizon engines"
I installed them both, started the engines up, and they hold steady at 650rpm at idle.
I have not taken the boat out yet, but im guess it should work correctly.
Anyone else replace these with aftermarket and notice the difference in design? (new one is on the bottom)

I hear of too many boating days ruined by not having one of these around. I keep a spare just in case.

I noticed that on mine as well when I replaced it. Runs fine.

The top one in your pic is how the OEM part is supposed to look. The aftermarket one you bought is a different design, but if it works, it works. All it does is open/close on demand.

What does the other side look like? There are some variations that will fit, and look the same on the bottom, but are not ignition-protected and wouldn't be safe to use.

This is an OEM part out of the box before I put it on (862998):

Sometimes they get gummed up with deposits and stick. If there's nothing wrong with the solenoid you can clean it out with carb cleaner, good as new.

Ordered 2 of these 3 years ago. The first one went 3 years ago and replaced it with this. The other went 2 years ago and replaced with the same. Bought another for a spare. Haven't had a problem since.

I followed your previous post regarding this and bought two of the same a few weeks back. Replaced both and one would not let me start the motor right out of the box and the other ran fine. I put the original one back in and will be sending the new one back. I may be a glutton for punishment but I ordered another one to try.
