I want to throw up

Mercruiser 3.0
End of last season I decided to buy a new 190 SPX IO. Looked at it every day in my garage frothing at the bit to get it out on the water for the first time, 5 months after pruchase. Fresh, clean and new.

Took it out twice and spotted a God damn stress crack by one of the cleats....originating where 1 of the two holes is reemed. I want to throw up. Couldn't have something nice and crack free for a couple years. Hell no!!! My old Ray probably had 10 of these 3 inch little SOB's all over it. Never botherd me. This bothers me.

As my very honest repair guy always tells me, It's A Boat, gonna have issues. Whether it is 1 year old or 20 years old, it is still a boat.

Is something like that not covered under warranty? Might be worth a shot.

On the flipside, at least you got the "first scratch" out of the way. Now you can stop worrying so much :)

That should be covered by warranty, the one SeaRay I bought new they fixed several stress cracks under warranty. The PIA is getting the work done, but if you need to wait to end of summer to get it fixed, it won't hurt anything. Stress cracks on a boat are pretty common, it's just going to happen.

No need to panic, way worse things are going to happen. Call the dealer and have it repaired under warranty. If you sweat the small stuff, you are going to have a stroke when the big stuff happens....Like if your marina happens to rip the windshield off your boat. Don't ask me how I know.

Figured I would have it a year or 2 before discovering one of these. Just sucks because I have been so careful with launching, pulling and during all the breaking in in between.

Glass half full:
Better it happens under warranty, no?

Yup. I’d be sick too knowing what they sell for. My 1970 didn’t have any cracks and the 1981 I just picked up for $2500 w a 350 mercruiser doesn’t have any cracks either.

The guy who drilled the holes took a shortcut. At least it’s not structural.

Go enjoy it.

Two buddies of mine bought boats back in the early 1980's. Both developed stress cracks soon, to the point of the hulls began to leak. Both boats were replaced. Soon after both boat companies went out of business.

My last boat was a cheap Stingray. After 35 years it never had a stress crack ANYWHERE.

My current boat is a Searay 190 SPX. Bought new, now has 3 seasons under her belt. Not a single issue with the hull anywhere. So, its not the company or the model, its a bad lamination.

I would not cry, I would demand a new boat. It has a lifetime hull warranty. Don't settle for less.

Demanding a new boat because of one cosmetic stress crack by a cleat? Good luck with that one. The boat may have a lifetime hull warranty but that doesn’t mean it’s a replacement warranty for that.

To the OP, I know it sucks but it probably is cosmetic based on what you’re describing. Call dealer email pics use boat and take in during the off season.

I uhhh....ummm...I'm going to go out on a limb and propose that the warranty on the hull allows Sea Ray a few other remedies before having to replace the entire boat for gelcoat imperfections. Just spit balling here, of course...:)

I think, if I'm reading correctly (we all only go by what we read so there is sometimes some "interpretation") about what Jim wrote is that he wasn't suggesting this case warrants a replacement - just pointing out some examples to show what I believe his main point to be is that it's more about how the hole was drilled and less about the quality of the boat to start with.

Cap mentioned it too, and I'd agree with it... the stress crack (cosmetic, but fixable) is due to the way the hole was drilled and the fastener is probably JUST barely touching the gelcoat. It happens, sometimes. It doesn't affect structural integrity in any way. Note it with your dealer for repair later and GO BOATNG! :)

The boats I used as examples did not have cosmetic defects, they had structural defects and fricken leaked! In fact, while they were waiting for the new boat to arrive, they painted the name on the transom: "Swiss Cheese".

The OP didn't show pics, so we really don't know how bad the "crack" is. The boat is brand new for gosh sakes. Having a stress crack on a corner someplace is common on some boats. But in my way of thinking if you tie a line to a cleat and tie the boat to a dock and it causes cracks, I would throw up too. And start demanding. The boat needs to be looked at by a professional.
