Last Sunday, I ran a friend's 05 320 DA from the Magothy River over to Kent Island. We went to the Jetty, and then to Red Eye's dock bar. It was a pretty calm day on the Chesapeake bay, but I did hit a few large wakes.

This 320 has the 320hp Merc 6.2 V-drives, and has all options. Both fuel tanks were just over half full, and the water tank was full. Don't know about the holding tank. There were 6 guys on board -- 5 are under 200lbs, 1 is about 350lbs. The boat probably has some bottom growth.

My point of reference: I have a 94 290 DA with twin 2005 Merc 220 hp 4.3 MPI's, Alpha drives, SS props. My boat has A/C and a generator. My boat is lift-kept at my house.

Things that exceeded my expectations:
--- Ride quality. The ride was a very significant improvement over my boat.
--- Width of side decks. Huge. Very easy side access to bow. In the cockpit, the gunnel is about a foot wide.
--- Wet bar is cool. Cockpit fridge is very useful, and great storage under the wet bar.
--- Massive extended swim platform is great, and close to the water.
--- Stereo system. This boat has the optional Polk/Momo stereo with Sirrius, subwoofer, and a ton of speakers. It goes very loud without distortion.
--- Overall quality/fit & finiish. My 94 is not bad, but this 2005 is a lot better built.
--- Smartcraft is fantastic.
--- Underwater transom lights are cool.
--- Nice diamond non-skid all over the boat.
--- Dock presence -- My 290 can't come close to the impact on people when this 320 pulls up to a dock.
--- Docking. This boat with inboard V-drives is easier to dock than my smaller boat with I/Os.

Things on the 320 that disappointed:
--- Performance. 3900 rpm gave us 25 mph. I expected better. Where is the "sport" in "sport cruiser"? I wonder how a 320 with stern drives runs.
--- Efficiency. We got less than 1 mpg that day.
--- Running angle. The boat runs with the bow quite a bit higher than my 290.
--- Noise & vibration. Certainly not bad, but definitely no improvement over my 290. For some reason, I expected this 320 to just "woosh" along with hardly any noise/vibration. The noise level was higher than I expected, and you can feel some engine vibration transmit through the deck structure.
--- Cockpit walk-around space. Great seating, but tough to move around without bumping into people. However, the boat owner kept the cockpit table in place.
--- Value for the money. The owner bought this boat new in 2005 for $165,000. He pays $800 per month, for probably 20 years. I bought my boat 18 months ago for $30,000. There is no comparison in the "boating enjoyment per dollar" between my boat and his boat.

Bottom line -- The 320 w/ V-drives would be a great step-up for me, but I may miss the sportier performance and feel of my 290. Also, for me, the size benefits may not outweigh the initial and long-term expenses.

Nice review. V-drives will not compare to stern drives when it comes to speed and fuel economy. The performance you described is pretty close to how my 320 performs. The numbers are slightly better if with less people on board. (you had a alot of weight on that boat) I was hitting 26 knots at 3900 when I first picked up the boat, (very little gear, 2 people on board and fresh bottom paint) now I am lucky to hit 24 knots at that RPM. The boat levels out at 25 knots/~28 MPH

If you have a boat lift and like the 320 you can get it with stern drives. I believe someone on this forum posted a top speed of 46 MPH with 6.2s and stern drives. I miss performance of stern drives but I don't miss the maintenance. I opted for V-drives because my boat sits in salt water all season.

er the boat.

I find it hard to believe that a 320 Sea Ray had much dock presence at Red Eye's.....my boat wouldn't either.

my '05 320 runs very much that way also. The bow rides high but the trim tabs not only put the nose down, it actually levels the boat giving more speed (go figure). I usually run between 3600 and 3800 rpm and get about 23-26mph (gps). I'll get about .9 for mileage. The 320 with v-drives is a dream to dock. i'm sure the stern drives are slightly more efficient and give better speed, but 26mph isnt too shabby and the journey is just as important to me as the destination. There are a few things i would change on the 320, but overall, its an exceptional boat for me and my family. I also think its one of the best looking boats out on the water to look at! (i may be a TAD biased on that though lol)

Great review. I agree with 99% of your observations. My question: Which way is the boating value? In favor of the 320 or 290?

Yeah, at Red Eye's no one even looked at the 320. But at the Jetty, we pulled up close and a lot of people were checking out the boat. A couple people commented "nice boat". No one at the Jetty would have looked at my older 290.

I don't want anybody to think I didn't like the 320. I absolutely love the boat. It truly is one of Sea Ray's best looking cruisers. They did an outstanding job combining asthetics with a roomy, well laid-out cabin & cockpit.

I guess I had unrealistic expectations of how much more boating enjoyment I would get out of this nice newer 320, compared to my older 290. I'm sure you guys know what its like to dream about a day out running "the next boat". No boat in the world can live up to those expectations.

I'm glad you said that, I thought I was nuts!

Curious if that was the typically selling price in 05 - I get more comments about my Dinghy than I do the 320. Speed seems a bit slow for the RPM's - I am at those speeds in the 3600 t0 3700 rpm's - when I drove a 320 with 6.2's my observation was that the boat had better mid-range acceleration than 350 mag's - but getting on plane felt about the same.

I tuned the props and I'm, getting 25mph at 3600rpm also the reveiw was spot on with the running angle. I have added 2" to the trim tabs and auto tab controlls, I'm dialed in.

WOT throttle position will generate about 4800-5000 RPM resulting in 35-40 MPH or so. Don't know exact top speed since I have not have my engines to WOT since I had the props tuned.

My friend's 320 that I ran hit 4600 rpm & 32 mph at WOT on Sunday. That was with a decent load and probably some bottom growth. He said the fastest the boat has gone is 34 mph.

At the beginning of the season I took the following reading:

WOT=35.4MPH, Port=4940RPM, Strbd=4840RPM. The boat was loaded with full fuel, full water and two adults.

My props were tuned to the class 1 specs and they're original 3 blade props.

WOT throttle position will generate about 4800-5000 RPM resulting in 35-40 MPH or so. Don't know exact top speed since I have not have my engines to WOT since I had the props tuned.
I would think that "35-40 MPH or so" is approximate numbers. It takes a lot of resources to push this baby extra 5MPH, so it must be some special config done to the boat to occumplish this.

You said you added 2" to the tabs, length or width?

Did you buy (make) new tabs or just weld (rivet)extensions on the existing tabs?

Thanks for the reply.

With V drives you won't get the same WOT RPM's as those that have outdrives... Top end speed won't be the same either..

Question: Are you guys saying your WOT speed is 25 MPH?

What is the WOT speed of the 320 w/V drives and 6.2's?

No - The WOT speed is in the mid 30's 34 to 37 is the range I hear.

WOT?? Where is everyone going in such a hurry? Roll her back to 3800 and enjoy the ride.

I do it only twice per season, at the beginning and at the end, to make sure the boat meets the specs and all is fine. I keep her at WOT just for couple of min or so. Any other times I ride @3650-3750RPMs ~24-26MPH. This is prefered cruising speed and sweet spot.
