I took my boat over for pump out and fueling on Sunday. It was some of the staffs last day and I wanted to tip them for their service for the passing season. There was a mild breeze pushing my bow around so I was doing the twin wiggle just to maintain the boat (no throttle). As the boat at the dock started pulling away, I checked my surroundings and started to maneuver. There was a kayaker off to my side about one and a half boat lengths away. Now the fun..

I talked with the kayaker in a normal tone of voice, advising them I was backing down and to stay clear of the back of the boat. He waved said something and then cut behind the boat. No biggie I could see him so I did my thing, pumped my fuel paid the folks, hugged my daughter, and went out for a short run to the beach.

AFTER I left my daughter calls and tells me the guy went into a rant and threw a fit about me warning him to stay clear of my backing boat. He called me every name in the book and when my daughter told him that she was my daughter he went off on her! I could hear him in the background screaming at the staff. Boo told him he could talk with me directly on the phone...nope he just screamed FU and F him?

All I said to him was to be careful as I was backing the boat! Basically a warning to stay clear.

You can yell at me all day long....don't cuss my daughter out for my actions!

Same person..he stayed away until I left then went on the attack

Becca helped him as the other two guys helped me at the fuel dock.

Maybe he was having a bad day in general....maybe he'd had run ins with other boaters who weren't as polite and you were the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back....maybe he thought he'd find a sympathetic ear with marina staff who "must have to deal with boaters who think they own the water" all the time and was sore when he realized B might be more sympathetic to you than him.

And maybe he's just a jerk. (That's my guess by the sounds of him instantly targeting her when he heard she was related.)

You had the right of way, were the bigger vessel , oh wait he wasn't under power...lol . I can't stand that in general..If you have a problem say it to my face. Don't run to your boss or mommy and tell on me!

I suspect he was an As5h0l#.

I've seen this before. It all happens in less than the blink of an eye.

He was pissed because he was in a kayak because his real boat was anchored out because his real boat could not get under the COL PKWY bridge because his real boat has a giant lightning rod coming out of the center because he's too cheap to buy fuel for a real boat.

At precisely the moment you were being a gentleman and announcing, without malice or forethought, your intentions, he had a blinding realization; !!!!HEY....I COULD GET HURT OUT HERE!!!!! A mere nanosecond later he recalled a meeting he went to years before at the Bushwood Golf and Yacht Club with Biff and Todd where they all "learned" some silly thing called the US Coast Guard’s Navigation Rules while sipping G&T's. He recalled Todd making a funny about Rule 2: Responsibility, which states that all vessels—even canoes and kayaks—need to follow the rules. This blast from the past came in conjunction with another realization; This is NOT Bushwood, Todd is 43 and still lives with his parents and I am not above the rules. The fourth and final realization was the nail in the coffin so to speak. Different folks have different tolerance levels and the human brain can only take so much..... He looked around the basin and realized..... and this would put any man over the edge.....I am merely a liberal with a salebote in a sea of testerone filled conservatives with tons of horsepower at their disposal. And he snapped.

It's not your fault. You were just at the right place at the wrong time.

Or he's just a dick and in that case you should hunt his ass down wake him.

 :smt024

Those two new Michigan Wheel 4 blade props would not give a damn if I had warned him or not. They would just chew that boat up until they stopped rotation.

Then he he would sue me!

Lets see 10,000 pounds of fiberglass, steel, and fuel backs over a 75 pound kayak .... I bet he expects a locomotive should stop as he walks the tracks ... Pedestrians have the right of way

Did he have a really big "No Wake" sign with him and come from a sailboat ?

Sounds as if he is off his Psych meds, sorry that your daughter had to listen to him. My 2 cents, laugh it off because his behavior was stupid / insane, nothing more.

I feel I am a extremely curtious boater. Slow down for other boaters, give room to other boats etc. still there are idiots who have no clue of what they are doing or you are trying to do and go off on you! Some people just don't get it!

I was coming in for fuel on Sunday after a week on the bay. Very familiar with the marina and a friend I followed went in first and advised the dock was full. One boat left and I stayed outside until he cleared and my friend took his spot at the fuel dock. Two boats took up the remaining space and took their sweet time. I hovered well after the attendant gave him his receipt and I watched the aft line be removed and noticed that the engines had not been started. The crew quickly tied the line again as I waited, and waited. My friend filled up and was ready to leave when the boat I waited for started out, slowly, very slowly. I let him clear and went to back in where he left when I noticed the larger boat (probably around 60') puts it in reverse. I am now maybe 20' behind him and shout out "Hey, I am right behind you!) to no avail. Passengers stared at me as though I was from Mars while the captain kept the vessel in reverse so negotiated my boat close to the end dock to avoid being run over.

The boat now is alongside me and I shout up "Do you not see me right here?" again on deaf ears. I did let out some expletives at this point for my own satisfaction and moved into their vacated spot. The first boat is still basically sitting in the basin taking up room so my friend went around him and out and later told me the larger vessel hit the throttles as soon as he started clearing the breakwater throwing a huge wake at anyone hoping to come into the marina.

All I know is that you can't fix stupid and need to assume the worst judgement from the boater next to you!

fantastic description of us!
love it.

IMO,

Either listen to him to see if he has any valid issues, or don't waste your time....There are some real nut jobs out there...No point in getting worked up about it...I've come to the realization that, in the past, I've given people far too much credit for being sane....

Humph, that's what five blasts are for....I can't tell you how many times I never witness a captain looking aft...Anyway, could have been alcohol related, inexperience, a jerk, anything....But next time don't forget you have a horn to get someones attention...Trying to yell over diesels is hard...

Don't let that jerk bother you. Guys like that go home and beat their dog. I'm sure someone will give him an attitude adjustment soon enough.

He didn't bother me until he cussed out my daughter, after that I want to be the one to adjust his attitude.

Yeah, that's where I would have lost my charm also. Yell and cuss at me all you want, but not my wife or daughter.
