Started to clean the outside of my boat but I'm having some trouble removing some paints marks off the side of the boat. Most just came up with my fingernail but some others are being stubborn is there a chemical I can use that will not hurt the gel coat? It's only on the surface and not dug in.

Thanks again for your help

I have some white "dock marks" already on my striping after just 2 weeks in.

That quick?:smt001

You should see the slip they had me in last year it was a tight squeeze and me being new I had a lot of dock loving go on....

I'm actually selling the boat so I'm trying to get her all nice pretty. I just purchased a 2000 270 Sundancer and should have it by mid week next week but the surveyor said she needs some cleaning so I will be polishing and waxing again luckily I'm finding it relaxing so far :smt001

Yea, that quick. I'm new to boating again after 20 years off and learning all over.

Good luck with the new boat!

When I had black hull I used Goo Gone or Goof Off on the stubborn marks but then I washed and re-polished that area right away after. I don't think either will harm the gel but will likely remove any wax/polish.

EDIT: Don't use either of the above on graphics because it will remove the ink.

Spray Nine will take off black marks. The stuff is amazing. Rinse well after using.

Black streak remover works well because it is for black streaks on the hull... West marine carries it... Wipe on, wipe off, its that easy...

I think it depends on the nature of the streak. I've used both the Starbrite successfully and the Goo Be Gone typically for glue remanents (gummy) coming from tape, old decals and similar.

This is a fairly polarizing matter amongst many, but I've also used Mr. Clean Magic Erasers a lot for really subborn stains. You have to wash off quickly though, and be prepared to touch up the polish in the area you've cleaned (as there appears to be abrasives in the little sponges). The Erasers also work great on silicone and rubber where there might be mold or mildew.

When I got a few skid marks on mine. :smt021
I pulled out the buffer with a mild buffing compound.

I use this old dog toy:

If I spit on the thing and rub it on the spot real hard... well.. it doesn't do much for the spot but it makes me feel good.

Your dogs must not be too hard on toys, mine destroy them in a matter of hours. I'm guessing that one would have no stuffing after 15-20 min! How come that thing only has one foot? Is that why it is always laying on it's side?

I'm going to second magic eraser. I don't use it much, but when nothing milder works, this does the job. I don't go crazy, just the corner of the pad to grab the mark.

Now that is just frick'n funny! Besides that's what you get for having a white hull!

As a relative Newbie still...I missed the WL reference (although I've encountered same on other sites). In my innocence, I thought Gary was just drinking again...:smt119

I have used ON OFF by marymate. Its says it takes off rust, water, alge, barnical stains i used it on the boat I bought that had a terrible water and exhaust stain and you would never know it had been moored, it was awsome. Its very powerful must were gloves and be careful not to get it on your self.I havent tried it on a rub mark, but this is what i would try.dosent hurt the gel coat.

I had alot of rub marks on my boat, I found that using a $300 buffer, a $35 3m pad, a $36 disk, $70 worth of compounds, polish, and wax, the marks came right off. Next time I am going to get a jar of olives and a bottle of gin and just look straight ahead. jimn:smt021

Magic Eraser will scratch the gel coat and leave a haze. Starbright Black Streak remover will not scratch the surface... Both will require a hit with wax but the ME will require some buffing first.
