On Saturday of last weekend, we finally got to take a trip on Moondancer after two months of being unable to get to the boat due to an unfortunate accident where the Admiral broke her foot and ankle (two fractures) and was unable to fully care for herself.

When we finally got to Moondancer, we discovered she was inundated with spiders, big ones, small ones and a few HUGE ones.

As we wanted to spend our time on the water, I just took the canvas down, brushed away the spiders and got underway to spend the rest of the day cruising to Washington, DC and back. A wonderful trip, smooth waters and too many reckless kids playing in our wake on jet ski's.

When we got back, it was late and we had to rush home to feed our 3 hungry poodles (the big standard ones with ravenous appetites).

The next day, we stopped at Walmart and picked up a large package of Dryer Sheets and headed back to the marina. We took all the canvas down, cleaned it off, then scrubbed the entire boat, fore and aft, in the anchor lockers, line lockers, etc and got rid of all signs of those 8-legged creepies.

I then put the canvas back on, placing dryer sheets between the canvas and the hull. It only took an extra 5 or 10 minutes to do this, and then went home again...you know....hungry dogs. We really have to be careful with the dogs now, because on the previous saturday we were out, when we got back, Rayzel (the "alpha dog", the biggest of the 3) jumped up and put his front paws on my shoulders and looked me straight in the eye, told me that if we made him go hungry again, "there would be he** to pay", so, naturally, I had to take him seriously. Rayzel was happy we got home by supper time

Yesterday, saturday a week after our spider prevention experiment, when we went to Moondancer to install a Mattress Topper and watch a movie, I was happy to find that no spiders made it to the interior of Moondancer. They were marching in "lockstep" on the swim platform, but never made it inside the cockpit. :smt038

It looks as though these dryer sheets may help keep those 8-legged creepies out of our boat. The cost of them at Walmart was a little over $1.00 for a box of 80. I think I used about 60 of them when I installed them a week ago.

Once again we hear a "Spider Tale!" I'll be interested to hear if the Fabric Softener sheets really work. Spider Dung on our beautiful white interiors is very annoying! Anyone have another antidote? Al W.

Spiders are a non issue at our slip. We spray the dock with an insecticide that attaches to a garden hose. It takes 5 minutes to spray a 50' dock. We spray the boat after an overnight at a marina. We have no spiders on our boat. I'm surprised more people don't do this. We noticed a number of public marinas sprayed this summer--something not seen before.

We spray for spiders too but it doesn't totally get rid of them so we use the Bounce dryer sheets and it really works! We've experimented with just spray and the difference is very obvious.

I stuff a dryer sheet in the ends of the bimini tops and in each hole of the cover around the bimini poles and no longer have to clean the little black dots of spider dung off our nice white seats.

We have a covered dock so we have to deal with spiders pooping on the boat as well. We put up a tarp to cover the ceiling and did some "strategic" spraying as well. The tarp pretty much eliminates the spider poop problem on the boat. We also spray our dock lines. Only a few spiders make into the boat and they are pretty easy to deal with.

What spray do you guys use? Every spider repellent I've found says it shouldn't be used near water since it's extremely harmful to fish. There must be something out there that isn't harmful! We'll try the Bounce though, that sounds like it's working for folks.

Bug b' Gone. Just about any spray for a garden or flowering trees will kill spiders. Just check to see if spiders are listed on the labe. I've not noticed any ill effects on fish.

Ortho Home Defense - Spray it where your mooring lines are tied at the pilings, dock, seaway, where something touchs land and your boat. It works... plain and simple.

We keep a spray bottle of Home Defense on the boat and spray lockers and under the gunnels once a year. Works great.
