anchor shank. There appear to be three options: (1) attempt to straighten in a press - i.e., bend it back without heating; (2) attempt to straighten while applying heat; or (3) replace.

My questions are: (A) will this adversely affect the ability of the anchor to set; (B) will either option (1) or (2) weaken the anchor to the point of being unsafe to use; and (B) does this condition adversely affect the windlass - I assume that the anchor is causing the rode to twist as it is hauled in?

The anchor is an OEM Sea Ray galvanized plow-type. The "bend" is a curve rather than a kink.

Thank you for providing your advice.

When I bent my anchor I tried to straighten it out.

I stuck the shank into the grates of sewer plate and whaled on it with a 12lb sledge. It came out 'ok' to use I guess, but I just felt that if I could bend it once, it has to be weaker and would only bend again.

I bought a shiny new SS CQR type plow.....

Thanks OSD9. Wow! I was surprised to see the bend that we got - I figured that we must have had the anchor well set. But you really must have been well set to get that bend in your old anchor.

My thought is the same as yours: bent once would suggest that it could be easily bent again.

Where did you get your new anchor? Do you use a bow roller - if so, does the head of the CQR flop around under way?

It sits just fine on the stock roller.....it pulls up tight and doesen't 'flap' around at all.

That anchor looks too fancy to use.

My anchor is bent too. When I bought the boat it was already "customized", so I'm not sure how it got bent. I thought the trucker did when they shipped the boat to Maryland, I never considered that you could bend the anchor by just using it.

I wasn't sure howI was going to straighent it, I never considered jamming it in a sewer and beating it like Rodney King , but I like that idea.

Dom,
that's some nice looking anchor.

I guess, anytime an anchor is bent it's very hard to get it back the way it was without professional tools. I had mine bent on 240DA and in the end it was looking similar to how you had your streightened. It's useable, but doesn't look good.

When bent an anchor is good for securing around corners.

Try a large arbor press to straighten the shank.

Get a new anchor and use the old one as a spare - stern anchor.

I already carry a spare smaller danforth with full tackle......

I laid the old bent anchor out to pasture as a landscape ornament....

man that shiny anchor looks great.

I hear tell that ther's a shiny anchor contest at the AC09 trip.....

Seems someone else had this same issue that bend anchor looks really familar

Well I definitely won't win the shiny contest, but I do know where to get a bent spare anchor that is just laying in a yard if I need one.

To answer your original questions.. If you decide to straighten it with heat, be careful as galvanized steel gives off toxic fumes when heated. Then either let it cool buried in sand or swirl it in 30 wt oil so it won,t loose any temper in the steel. If you press straighten it ,there is a chance the galvanized coating will detach. Good Luck

How many pounds does that new anchor weight? 33 lbs.?

Thanks
