Anyone ever use a hydro foil on cav. plate to aid in getting on plane in a 80's 260 sundancer? good/bad idea?

There are actually quite a few previous threads about these fins, but most are in regards to smaller boats. Still, though, it is some good reading.

Honestly, I think you'd be wasting your money. I've seen a marginal amount of help on a '93 230DA, but I don't have any personal experience on anything larger.

It's going to have a much smaller impact on lifting your stern than it would lifting the stern of an 18-footer. A fin will produce "x" amount of pounds of lift (I have no idea what this number is). But, for argument's sake, let's assume it's 100lbs. Obviously 100lbs of lift helping a 2,000lb boat will have more of an impact than it would trying to lift yours.

Your best bet is to install trim tabs. Bennett's are the "old standby" and have been around for ages. The only other set I'd recommend would be Lenco. They're used on some go-fast boats (including the Sea Ray Pachanga) and are electric (instead of hydraulic). They respond a little quicker and offer easier installation. Both are good companies.

Another thing you can do is to add more chain to your anchor rode.

I tried one years ago on a 1989 268 Dancer with a 454/Bravo I. It caused the boat to porpouse at higher speeds. As soon as I started trimming the drive up to get the hull at the right attitude, the bow would continue to rise then would fall back down and rise/fall, rise/fall - well you get the idea.

What helped most was replacing the small stock trim tabs with ones that were 24" wide. We were on plane faster and it was more stable at medium/low speed.

"Another thing you can do is to add more chain to your anchor rode." Shall we call this, Gary humor/banter... I love it !!!

No, actually I was serious about that one! :smt001

Those kind of thoughts save you some time and money too huh?

Thats why I like the forum!

yep, thats what i like about this forum,i can run ideas by the experts and see if they float or sink.I have a set of hydro foils from a 19 ft boat with a 260 5.7, that i had just laying around.I am going to try a new prop instead.going to try a 16/14p black max,a elephant ear type.

My old '82 260SXL had the 18gal fresh water tank under the vberth on the centerline. I would always keep it near full if we were going out with extra guests as it helped plane the boat using less trim tab deflection, thus less drag, worked well.
