I know it's not a boating topic but I also know how much pets mean to many of us.

Last night my wife and daughter and I had to take Gunner, our 11 year old chocolate lab, in to be put down as he had terminal leukemia and was really starting to suffer. Tried to be the big strong dad for Rya who is only 6 and just couldn't do it - what a tear fest. We have been totally honest with her about Gunner's declining health and we were all with him when the time came. Knowing he is suffering and that it is the right thing to do sure does not make it any easier when it comes right down to it.

It will be very empty when I get home from work tonight and he is not laying on the cool tile in front of the door.

I think we will spend a quiet weekend on the boat reflecting, remembering, and most likely some crying as we think of our lost friend.

I'm not a religious man but God Speed Gunner.

So sorry to hear about Gunner. It is very difficult losing a pet. We have experienced that loss ourselves many times in the past with our own animals and we understand exactly how you and your family feels.

Sorry to hear that. It's always so hard to lose a pet and you end up feeling cheated in some way or another. I swore I would never have another dog after our 2 huskies died about 4 years ago. My wife went out right away and got 2 more dogs (Golden Retrievees). Seems like all you do is buy a dog, get way to emotionally attached, then they die.

Get a turtle for your next pet... it'll outlive you and you can poke a stick at it everyday and not care.

Jeff, sorry to hear about your loss. We have two yorkies (8 and 9) and after reading your posts I will be going home for lunch, like everyday and give them an extended hug!

Jeff, so sorry about your loss. Unfortunately, we know this all too well. Our previous golden made it to 15 by heroic measures, but the suffering far exceeded the quality of life she had at the end. We waited 5 years before getting our current golden and probably shouldn’t have waited that long.

I just read the book “Marley and Me†– if you pick it up, maybe skip the last two chapters.

Jeff,

Sorry for your loss. Gunner went too soon, but at least he is pain free now. I have a 2yr old yellow lab and a black labx that just turned 15. She's still kickin, but I have had the discussion with my vet to determine when the time is right. Its hard because they tend to not show their discomfort and the last thing you want is for them to be in pain. You did the right thing and when the time is right for you and your family, you will know when you are ready for another pup.....not that you can replace Gunner, but it can help fill that empty space inside you after your loss. Best to you and your family during this difficult time.

I read that also....its a must read book for any lab owners. Of course the ending is sad...but any book covering a dogs life is always sad at the end.

Very sorry to hear of your loss. :smt009

Loosing a long time pet is the same as a family member to many folks. :smt009

Jeff and family-
The loss of a family pet, I believe, is second to losing a family member. Just because Gunner is not with you now physically doesn't mean he's gone too far. Gunner can now play with Kala (photo attached) at the mighty dog heaven playground.

Not having children of my own Kala was my "baby". Her berth on my Sundancer was the midberth with her own AC vent for those hot Wisconsin days. She died 5 days after her 13th birthday.

God bless Gunner and all the other Boat dogs that have moved on to the next level in their lives....

Thank you all for your kind words.

I hope this post brought back only fond memories of your pets for all of you.
