Hi all....

I've been a boater for over 40 years. However, I live on Lake George in upstate New York and that's the only body of water I've ever navigated on in all these years. I recently bought a new (new to me) 230DA and I find I'm staying on it for extended periods very comfortably.

The beautiful historic Hudson River runs from near where I live all the way down to NYC and I'd really like to take the scenic 160 mile journey south, down to the city with my girlfriend.

As I mentioned, I'm an experienced boater but I've only been on the 32 mile long Lake George. I'm seeking advice from people who have navigated the Hudson to share their experiences and advise me of what I shoud know as far as the best marinas along the way for overnight docking and where I could dock once I reach NYC so we can spend the day sightseeing.

Are their marinas down south of the George Washington Bridge where we could pick up a subway? Or if we go right out into the harbor can we circle Liberty Island and even circle Manahattan Island and find marinas along the shoreline with safe public docking?

Thanks,

dusty ~

We have our boat on Sacandaga and are looking to do the same thing some day. Have just started to research marinas and destinations. Looks like a popular marina is Liberty Landing. You can catch a ride to the city and the marina is pretty well protected from early morning boat traffic (wakes). Good luck

It's still one of my favorite rides each spring and fall. Here is anolder thread; but the info is still pretty relevant.

Troy town docks are convenient to restaurants; but very limited facilities (showers & restrooms).
Coeymans has a nice restaurant and good facilities; as do Hop-O-Nose and Catskill Marinas in Catskill.
I don't know if Kingston City Docks has any showers or facilities; but it's a cute town with good restaurants (lunch stop?).
Riverfront Marina in Newburg has facilities and is convenient to a number of restaurants.
In Haverstaw Bay, Haverstaw Marina has a restaurant and facilities and across the bay Half Moon Bay has nice facilities, but it's a walk to any restaurants.
I understand Liberty Landing in Jersey City has finally upgraded their facilities, but transportation to Manhattan can still be problematic.
I'm sure some of the "locals" have more suggestions.

Have fun and take some time to enjoy the passage.

I havent been on the Hudson in years...although I live 1 mile from it. I would suggest getting some available charts and looking them over really good before your trip. Not like a lake where you just pretty much go where you want and avoid the danger buoys....Stay WELL within the Red and Green and watch your depth all the time.

1.Stay in the channel when cruising because just outside the channel can change depth drastically. Exposed sand bars are not uncommon at low tide 30 foot outside the marked channel. Many of boaters have found out the hard way.

2.Don't play games with the commercial traffic and give them a wide berth.

3. Mind you speed and watch your wake. There are many boat clubs and marinas along the river with posted "no wake" zones or speed limits. You will be called out by most harbor masters on the VHF Radio should you violate them.

4. Sherrif, State Police, En Con and some local police are out in force from Albany south on the river. Plenty of boarding to check out your boat and also writing a lot of various "beverage" tickets.

5.Fueling and food is plentiful in the Catskill Creek and the overnight dockage is good with calm waters as the norm. You may get rocked to sleep at most of the marinas without a sea wall on the river.

We have used Liberty landing several times and recommend it. The water taxi will bring you to Manhattan where you get on the subway. The marina in Manhattan is Chelsea Piers. Liberty Landing gives easy access to the the Statue of liberty and Ellis Island. Be prepared for New York dockage rates.

Agreed.... just got back from New York City. Liberty Landing is great, and getting better by the way with the new construction going on there. I have a long post on our clubs website about New York City.
