How was your Memorial Day weekend?

No, that is only proper for boat at anchor. My running flag is off my bimini pole you see there.

But you do see a lot of flags run off whip antenna's down here.

We set a new record for quickest limit of Red Snapper caught (4 allowed per person) in just 20 minutes :smt001 That included walking each fish to the front cooler and washing the deck spotless after each catch. :smt021
I was on my buddy's new boat. Seas got up to 5ft so it was nice to head in early for a change.

It was on a new spot we found that morning so we named it "Memorial Day" on the chartplotter.

THANKS to all that serve or have served the USA...

That's almost Grocery store or Fish Market speed!
Nice work :smt038

mmmmm snapper....

All I caught over the weekend was PCB contaminated catfish. a big sucker stabbed me with his poison fin right in the finger. :smt009

We had a marina sponsored raft up (Fort Loudon Marina "Rocking the Docks") with probably 300-400 or so boats. Our raft up was 50 boats last official count I heard. I'll get pic's as soon as I get back in town. Only problem was our raft up was so wide there was no perspective available in the cove able to capture the whole thing. Live music all day and the evening finished with fireworks on the water. There was roughly 150-200 or so boats that actually spent the night on the hook, not bad for a marina that wet slips roughly 350 or so boats. Great times to be had for sure

great time as well... headed out friday afternoon.... came back Monday night.... spent all weekend in the American river rafted up with some friends. Took a trip down the Sacramento on Monday...

River flows were really low.... and ended up whacking both props.... headed to the repair shop tomorrow... this is my excuse to buy a pair of enertia props right  and keep the old ones as spares....

Saw several sea lions up the American.... I have not seen them any further up river than where the Sac and American meet..... very interesting to have those fellas this far out of salt water.

are you sure it was shallow and not the whales? Are/were they near you?

they were near very near us at one point before this weekend..... probably with a couple of miles.... in the turning basin of the port.... the port is accessed via the deep water shipping channel which is the accessed just north of Rio Vista at a Y in the river.... go left for deep water channel... right for natural flow of the Sacramento (for the locals I am purposely leaving out the end of steamboat slough)

While the turning basin of the deep water shipping channel and the area we are in are very close.... there is not a direct navigable connection without going south to Rio Vista to the "Y" first. The silt has built up an island in front of the old lock nowdays....

there were tons of folks down trying to get a glimpse of the whales... and violating the protection zone.... I just want to leave the whales alone.... and let them get back to the salty stuff....

Our 6 Day trip to Punta Gorda, Florida was both good and bad.

(Forgot to take the camera with us :smt021 )

I'll start with the good, Trailer down 2 hours from Tampa to Punta Gorda and splash the boat at Ponce Delon Park. Motor it into Punta Gorda Isles channels where a family member owns a house with a dock.

Next morning we go out to Charlotte Harbor for some fishing, the newly installed Garmin 3205 shows us where all the ship wrecks and reefs are. We catch and release, Lizard Fish, Small Grouper, Red Snapper, Snook, Mackeral, and a few others in the 4 days on the water we caught and released probably 30-40 fish.

We also saw 2 Coral/Pumkin Colored Sea Turtles, a huge ray (mana or sting or devil not sure). Then we took the boat out to it's first gulf ride. Went past about 20 boats fishing but didn't realized what they were fishing, kept going to crystal blue water 30-40 foot deep and you could see stright to the sandy bottom and all the fish swimming under the boat.

Coming back in we checked out what the boats were fishing and WOW a huge school of tarpon 100's of them was amazing thing to see even charter boats out there filming the event and people catching tarpon. Apparently from what we heard there were hammer head sharks in the water too but we didn't see them.

Having the GPS was an awsome thing to be able to have an idea where it was shallow and where it wasn't and where things were was great.

Now for the bad part. LOVE BUGS! Millions and Millions of them 6 hours of cleaning the boat and it's still not 100% like I'd like it but my body couldn't take it anymore. Think I need the pressure washer for the boat deck to get it clean again. Also that dock behind the family members house, well it's concrete and has only 3 poles about 5 feet apart with just a little rubber on them. On the 3rd day when we got back the wind had picked up and when trying to dock I was trying to keep it on the post that had some protection and a gust blew the nose into the concrete and scraped it up pretty good :smt089 but It was bound to happen and hopefully will be a long time before it happens again.

Now the boat is broken in and time for it's first service, went from about 10 hours before this trip to 30+ hours now so time to get it in to service. Oh and found out the auto bildge pump doesn't work or the switch doesn't work. On the second day I heard some light squeeking like a loose belt when I opened the engine compartment I found it FULL of water explained why it seemed like the boat had troble getting on plain as day after day. I'll be having them fix that and replacing the belt since it had salt water all over it. I did rinse it all down with fresh water after we took it out of the water but from what I read the belt doesn't like salt water at all.

Other then that a great weekend and finally got to use the boat for some real enjoyment!

Love bugs. Yuck. Remember them well from my time in Florida. I recall that their secretions can be very acidic and damaging to finishes, right?

Our weekend started Saturday am splashing the boat in our nearby resevoir. It was a rainy day and we spent the afternoon in the slip we'd rented for the weekend, napping and making the boat ship-shape. It was a restful night as the parties politely ended at 9:30.

Sunday we poked around the lake, barbequed lunch on the hook, and had a general great time. There was only one party that night, but it didn't stop until 4:40 am when I took a hike to where it was and let one of the partyers know I knew his dad. That ended things and we slept in late Monday and had an uneventful and fun day of more of the same -- dodging the rain here and there.

There's lots of water here in Iowa, and we got 2 more inches last night. Forecast is thunderstorms on and off through Weds of next week.

Tomorrow we'll go back to the lake until Sunday afternoon for even more of the same -- except the partying won't go so long this weekend.

Had an excellent weekend - Friday night - dead battary cause "someone" forgot to turn it off when they were listening to tunes while cleaning - but still out Friday for a sunset viewing - out Saturday from about 2 to 7pm - the Admiral slept and the Captain tossed a hook in the water over and over to no success - but Noyac Bay and Sag Harbor Cove were calm and gorgeous and we just chilled. Sunday we were out all day - just getting used to living the boating live again and learning how to use the GPS - it was fabulous.
